About the Item

A beautiful mid 20th century English naive oil on board depicting a tranquil river landscape, by Bernard Carter. The artist is featured in Anatole Jakovsky's ''Peintres Naïfs'' which is known as the bible of 20th century naive painters. This delicately painted and striking work depicts a fisherman on the River Avon at Netton, with hens on the riverbank . It is signed lower left and inscribed with title on the reverse. Presented in a fine swept frame. Artist: Bernard Carter (British, 1920-2014) Title: On the Avon at Netton Medium: Oil on board Size: 16.5 x 17.5 inches (42 x 44 cm) including the frame Bernard Carter was a true naive painter of the 20th century. A traditional schoolteacher, he was enthusiastic about painting since the age of 4. Carter spent WW2 in Egypt with the R.A.F: after the war he married and lived in South London with his wife and child. His style is extremely delicate, using fresh light colours. He was especially fond of painting stretches of water such as pools and rivers, and he was very knowledgeable about the flora and fauna of such districts. Everything he painted was clearly and accurately presented - it's very naturalness gives his painting a supernatural air. Text source: ''Peintres Naïfs'' by Anatole Jakovsky
