Edward Pritchett
view of St. Mark's Square

About the Item

Edward Pritchett (active between 1828 and 1864) View of St. Mark's Square Oil on canvas, 25 x 35.5 cm Framed, 38 x 47 cm Reports about the life of British-born painter Edward Pritchett appear particularly limited: in writings of the time, he was appropriately described as an "elusive" character. Despite the absolute scarcity of biographical information about the painter, we can say with certainty that he lived for more than thirty years in Venice, producing valuable views of the city. The artist was particularly close to the circle of English painters active in the Veneto and, more generally, in northern Italy around the middle of the nineteenth century: these include John Wharlton, Bunney, James Holland, the Luke Fildes, Henry Woods, and, in a later generation, William Logsdail. In the painting in question, St. Mark's Square appears to be enlivened by a series of sparkling figurines, many of them in typical costume: this appearance recalls many of the works requested by travelers, who, as early as the late eighteenth century, elected Venice as a favorite stop on the Grand Tour. The lagoon is depicted in light hues and soothing colors, reminiscent of the works of Anglo-Saxon masters active in the Veneto around the middle of the 19th century. This particular glimpse of St. Mark's Square, within which a glimpse of the opulent profile of the Doge's Palace can be glimpsed, attracted the attention of numerous artists during the nineteenth century: these include such masters as Grubacs and Corot, who, in La Piazzatta, captures this glimpse.
