Jim Woodson
Temporal Conflated Disturbance

2016

About the Item

Short Statements on Painting by Jim Woodson (in no particular order): Remember less, Explore More Learn then forget, then look and discover Move Thought into Thinking A verb is more active than a noun Try not to Know A bit of knowledge spoils what can be discovered Filter knowing at the end of the brush Ideas Die if not Transformed The High Desert in Abiquiu has inspired Texas artist Jim Woodson since exploring the region via motorcycle in the late 1980’s. His paintings are a unity of the intuitive process of painting, personal ideology, and the desert landscape. Woodson embraces the concepts of time, space, and knowledge in his work and uses these three elements to title his paintings. About his recent work, Jim Woodson states: "These paintings draw inspiration from the high deserts of the southwest, mostly in Texas and New Mexico. These "outer" landscapes are modified by "inner ones." The inner concerns are a dialogue with dreams, memories, thought fragments and streams of consciousness. By the contextual placement or overlay of inner and outer, I hope to convey my own thoughts about the nature of imagination: to achieve a sense of the imagination’s movement (tempo) against a relatively unchanging environment (duration)." In 2013, Woodson was honored by the Texas State Legislature and the Texas Commission on the Arts as the Texas State Artist of the Year in 2D. This designation is the state’s highest recognition for excellence in the arts. He earned a BFA from Texas Christian University in 1965, and an MFA from The University of Texas at Austin in 1967. In 2014, Woodson was distinguished as Professor Emeritus at TCU, where he had been on the faculty since 1974. Valley House Gallery has presented four solo exhibitions of Jim Woodson's work since 2008.

Bon Voyage
By Travis Walker
Located in Bozeman, MT
For the last 10 years Travis Walker has made landscape paintings about Jackson Hole, a place that never ceases to inspire him to pick up his brushes. He works on location, capturing the essence of the seemingly mundane scenes around town: an old salon, a decaying house with a fence made of skis, a vintage trailer park. His work is influenced by the work of American regionalists Edward Hopper and Grant Wood, Japanese printmaking, and German Expressionism. Travis Walker is the founder and director of Teton Artlab, a nonprofit arts organization that provides studio space for artists. He was born in 1976 in Tokyo, Japan, and earned his BFA in Painting and Printmaking in 2000 from Virginia Commonwealth University. Recent group exhibitions include the 2012 Western Visions Show and Sale and the 2013 and 2012 Takin' It to the Streets Art Fair, among many others. Solo exhibitions include "American Dreams" in 2012 at Cowboy Coffee...
