About the Item

Constant Troyon "Three Sheep and a Rooster" Oil on cradled panel, c. 1840’s Image Size: 13.25” x 9.75” Signed “C. Troyon”, lower left Constant Troyon was born in Sèvres on the 28th of August, 1810. He would become the most admired animal painter of the nineteenth century and the earliest of the Barbizon artists to achieve substantial commercial success. Both Troyon’s father and his grandfather were painters at the Sèvres porcelain factory. He received his first instruction in landscape from the factory’s director, his godfather. In his youth, Troyon spent countless hours drawing in the parks of Sèvres. A picturesque area, easily accessible to Paris, Sèvres was a lucky spot for Troyon to have been raised. Many naturalistic painters flocked to Sèvres for inspiration during the 1820s. As Troyon grew, he supported himself like his father and his father before him by painting for the porcelain factory. As a young man Troyon explored the French countryside, travelling from town to town, earning money as a porcelain painter whenever he could. During his travels he befriended Camille Roqueplan (1803-1855), who introduced him to other artists like Jules Dupré (1811-1889), Paul Huet (1804-1869), Narcisse-Virgile Díaz de la Peña (1807-1876) and Théodore Rousseau (1812-1867). The associations he made and the artistic growth he experienced during his travels would secure his place at the core of the Barbizon school. Troyon made his Salon debut in 1833 exhibiting three landscapes depicting the area around his boyhood home of Sèvres. He used bright colors in these early works, still drawing on his experience working with porcelain glazes. At the Salon of 1846 he was awarded a first-class medal and, in 1847, he left for Holland where he studied the works of the seventeenth century Dutch masters. He was particularly influenced by the Dutch animal painters Albert Cuyp (1620-1691) and Paulus Potter (1625-1654). After his time in Holland, animal painting became the primary focus of Troyon’s art. His work of this period would be the work he is best remembered for. His extremely realistic scenes of oxen, cattle grazing and sheep herding along country roadways were favorably received by the public and critics alike. Sadly, Troyon could not enjoy his success long. Troyon fell ill in 1863 and died soon after in Paris on the 20th of March, 1865. His premature death prompted his mother to sell the remaining paintings in his studio. The massive proceeds went to establish the Prix Troyon, an award at the École des BeauxArts given to young artists specializing in animal or landscape painting.
