Early Light is an original oil on paper by Richard Whadcock. This was an early morning on the way to the study. A sea mist was being slowly lifted by the rising sun and revealing the surroundings through subtly changing diffused light..
Richard Whadcock is a contemporary artist specialising in atmospheric landscape paintings. His contemporary landscape paintings explore the South Downs and East Sussex coast. Trying to capture its ever changing dramatic atmosphere from silent stillness to squally days. The South Downs are only a starting point as the paintings themselves eventually take over and follow their own path creating their unique surface landscape. Richard studied at Fine Art at Bristol Polytechnic from 1986-89 where the work crossed between painting and printmaking. He then went onto study for his MA at the Royal College of Art specialising in printmaking. He utilised etching but mainly lithography due to its closeness to painting. Along side these he would also paint with all these disciplines feeding each other and expanding ideas. After leaving college Richard was awarded a residency at the Lowick House Print Workshop in Cumbria and more recently, 2014, he was also awarded a two week residency at Cill Rialaig artists village in Kerry, Ireland. His studio has been part of the Phoenix Arts studios in Brighton for the last 15yrs. It is one of the largest artist lead organisations remaining. The entire artwork is overtaken by the water of the sea, with no land or sky to divert your focus from the vastness of the ocean's depths.
Artist Commentary:
As an artist, I just love being able to take creative license and paint what my mood dictates. The photo reference for this painting was of New England waters and the day I painted this it is was cold and rainy. I was looking for warmth, not 20 degree temps! I took out my set of pastels that remind me of warmer climates and painted this in that palette. The luminosity of pastels really comes through in this painting and just like that, I'm transported under a palm tree watching...

Edouard-Jean Dambourgez first studied under Jules Lefebvre and, later, as an engraver and chromo-lithographer with Gustave Boulanger. Dambourgez commenced exhibiting in 1880 at the Salon des Artistes Français, and, in 1883, was elected a member of the Society. He exhibited frequently and with success at the other major Paris salons including the Salon d'Automne, the Salon des Independants and the Salon des Champs-de-Mars. In 1884, he was commissioned by the Louvre to engrave the illustrations for the catalog to the Thiers Collection, recently bequeathed to the Museum. The recipient of numerous prizes, medals and juried awards, Dambourgez received an honorable distinction in 1888 and an honorable mention in 1891.
In 1888, the critic Albert Wolff spotted his canvas 'A Cheese Shop' and recommended its inclusion at the Salon des Artistes Français. In 1891, the city of Paris bought his large canvas, 'The Cream and Cheese Market...

Ritchie A. Benson grew up in the Los Angeles area during the World War 11 era. By the late 1950s, he was studying watercolor painting and by the 1960s was exhibiting on a national level. He spent a great deal of time painting along the California coast and was most interested in producing works which pictured boats and harbor scenes.
His watercolors were sold through the Challis Gallery in Laguna Beach and through art association exhibition sales. Although he continued to paint occasionally in Southern California, most of Bensen's later works were done in Mendocino, California, or farther north in Washington state where he spent a lot of time painting on the beaches...
