About the Item

Elizabeth Ross is a painter, photographer and teacher who has been instrumental in the education of hundreds of young artists across the Southeast. The Staunton, Virginia native is inspired by nature and captures the raw beauty in her floral oil paintings and photographs of morning dew. She also creates kaleidoscopic mandalas of natural forms from photographs that she has taken – mounting some in light boxes and others on aluminum. Ross organizes and leads an artist-based farm class every spring held at “Airy Knoll”, her farm in Virginia, where she takes students for an immersion into the process of creativity. The arts of writing, drawing, painting, photography and earth sculpture all factor in this process. Now, thirty-eight years and thousands of students later, she still teaches as she strives to keep a balance among her many passions. Ross explains, "My goal as an artist continues to be what it has been for countless years: to make visible in painting and photography the exquisite phenomena in the natural world that speak to the human heart. I wish to be a poet, to speak of the transient nature of the seasons of the earth and of our lives." This outlook is evident in Pasture After Rain, a close and extremely detailed view of the dewy grass found in a pasture after a spell of rain showers. The simplicity of the title is reflective of the simplistic beauty found in nature, and Ross' ability to capture that in her work. The brightness and richness of the green color palette, the stillness of entangled blades of grass, the spectrum of light in the single drop of rain that remains: all elements which create a balanced snapshot of the experience of rain, and the beauty that is left behind.
