This painting is one of ‘Aleppo and Kyiv Urban Landscape No.2’ series featuring many windows gazing at the world. This is a collection of different neighborhoods in Aleppo city that resembles Kyiv urban scenes of collapsed apartment floors, fallen balconies, curved rooftops, debris and punched holes in building facades. This painting reveals haunting and disturbing scenes and intentionally painted with a palette of gray tones with hints of colorful swirling, gestural brushstrokes that emerges from the canvas with a vigorous life force. This painting is No.2 and can be purchased with No.1 with more discount, see both No.1 & No.2 Diptych size 48" x 48" x 2". This painting is one of ‘Chaos series inspired by the history of Aleppo which is a muse and inspiration for artists and writers including Mark Twain famous quote “We shall remember… Aleppo, the ‘Pearl of the East,’ the pride of Syria, the fabled garden of Eden, the home of princes and genii of the Arabian Nights, the oldest metropolis on Earth, the one city in all the world that has kept its name and held its place and looked serenely on while the Kingdoms and Empires of four thousand years have risen to life, enjoyed their little season of pride and pomp, and then vanished and been forgotten.” Khawam’s work explores social and heritage structures that objectify marginalized communities and the bodies of vulnerable populations especially the immigrants by examining the cross-cultural dynamic in our communities for better cultural bridge building and understanding. Just as essential to his work is a social engagement practice through which he reframes objectifying societal structures by bringing contemporary arts and ideas into different multicultural communities through arts and cultural institutions. Khawam’s work is characterized by its layered formal, material, and conceptual complexity of a grid like forms, colors and gestures in a more experimental, spontaneous working process. The art is sketched from various references including his photography and media images to create a composition. The second half of the process is the deconstruction of forms in a semi-abstract manner with gestural brushstrokes and the use of materials that intensify our visual experience. Tony Khawam born in Aleppo, lives and works in South Florida, USA. Khawam received a BFA from the School of Visual Arts, New York, NY (1985) and a Master in Commercial Art from Montclair State University, NJ (1987). He is deeply rooted in his Middle Eastern heritage and the American experience through histories, current events, and the surrounding urban landscape with influences of post-war German and American art. His heritage paintings are formed by ideas about today’s socio-cultural issues such as social disruption, displacement, and immigration, intertwined with the American culture. Khawam has been exhibited nationally in galleries and museums and a recipient of recent awards including the “Artist Support Cultural Grant” Broward County Cultural Division, FL (2021/22); the “American Rescue Cultural Grant” National Endowment for the Arts through Florida Division of Arts & Culture (2021); “Individual Artist Award, Specific Cultural Project”, Florida Division of Cultural Affairs (2021); the “Creative Investment Program Award” Broward County Cultural Division, FL (2020). He is a panelist for Grant programs and public art appointed by the Broward County Cultural Division, Fort Lauderdale, FL, and a participant in numerous workshops including “Artists at the Community Development Table” Americans For the Arts (2019); and the “Artist as an Entrepreneur Institute” Broward County Division of Culture, Fort Lauderdale, FL (2019). Khawam’s work is included in numerous museums, private and public collections throughout the Americas, Europe, and the Middle East. He has given “Artist talk” and participated as a panelist at several art institutions.
