"Buffalos & Orange Tree" Oil painting 39" x 39" inch by Omar Abdel Zaher Abdel Zaher is a graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts in Helwan and has been painting for three decades and has notably featured in a variety of collective exhibitions, including Salon El Shabab for nine consecutive years. In his work Abdel Zaher predominantly explore Egypt’s ubiquitous cultural markers and traditions, especially where they exist in their most unadulterated and exemplary form, the country’s bountiful rural communities. Abdel Zaher captures the infectious joie de vivre of Egypt’s countryside folk, depicting with the most expressive and authentic zeal their daily lives and routines, and it is unmistakable how their carefree and jubilant nature is reflected in the artist’s compositional style that can be described in the exact same manner. Above all, Abdel Zaher is intensely truthful in his depictions of these rural scenes, which range from fruit merchants, water bearers, donkey-drawn carts, village festivals, celebratory events and more. We derive a sense of childlike affection to the characters in his works, which he imagines without any embellishment or deviation from reality. However, his works are not hyperrealist in the traditional sense. Instead, they combine a certain naïve expressionism along with a clear effort to retain a faithful reproduction of typical scenes that are tethered to our identity and to this blessed land. Abdel Zaher’s palette is unashamedly natural in generally subdued earthen tones one would expect to see in such settings. However, he does punctuate these organic hues with bold and powerful ones like scarlet, aquamarine and radiant yellow gold that although appearing spontaneous are unobtrusive and compatible with the subjects and themes in his works. He employs a type of block color segmentation that is emphatic making the scenes he paints more vivid and prominent in our mind’s eye. This optimistic and cheerful palette is reflective of the many blessings of living on this timeless land, especially its far-flung rural communities. The beauty of Abdel Zaher’s paintings lies in his palpable affinity for the subjects he depicts and their way of life, they are the prototypical characters that have defined Egypt since the dawn of time, and through his art, he confirms that they will always have an indispensable role in our society, heritage and collective identity.

    An Orientalist beach scene of the coast of Algeria at Chenoua by French painter Gustave Lino. The painting is signed, located and dated bottom left. Presented in a plain gilt frame. A charming and atmospheric view of a day at the beach. The revellers are enjoying bathing in the Mediterranean, resting under their colourful parasols against the sun and exploring the far off rocks of the cove. The sea gently lapping against the rocks at the shore. A small row boat ready for an excursion. Lino has beautifully captured the feeling of joy and fun that a day at the beach brings. Gustave Lino was born in 1893 in Mulhouse, France. At the age of twenty, he went to Marseille, discovered Provence and the Mediterranean. He was already interested in painting and art from numerous visits to the museum of his hometown, but he had not yet followed any training in this field. In Marseille, far from home and idle, he decides, almost on a whim, to travel to Algiers, without really knowing what he will discover there. He embarked for Algiers at the age of 19 in 1912. He exhibited with his friends Romeo Charles Aglietti in 1914 at 'Herero' in Algiers. Unfortunately in 1914 in Corsica in Ajaccio, being of German nationality and Mulhouse being part of the German Empire since 1871, he was interned as a 'civilian'. He spent the First World War in the Isle of Beauty but spent his time wisely developing his artistic skills. He realised many paintings as well as the historical decorations of the Solferino Hotel in Ajaccio and the religious decorations of the castle of Malaspena-Massa in Belgodère. In December 1918, he returned to Algiers where he was a pupil of Georges-Antoine Rochegrosse. He exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français from 1926 and at the Danton gallery, rue La Boétie in 1927. He settled permanently in Algiers and then in Bou-Saada. Back in Algeria, he took a close interest in the painting of Albert Marquet, which particularly seduced him and with whom he became a close friend. The transparent sharpness, this harmony of lines and tones becomes his ideal of perfection. He specialised in Algerian seascapes and landscapes, a colourist above all.
