LISA CORINNE DAVIS Measured Manipulation, 2023 Oil on canvas 80 x 60 inches 203.2 x 152.4 cm Signed, titled, and dated (verso) -- Lisa Corinne Davis is a Brooklyn-based painter best known for paintings and works on paper that transcend—or, more accurately, reject—the labels of abstraction. Intersecting planes cover the canvases, populated by cartographic grids, warped lines, and amoebic waves to evoke multilayered maps with encoded narratives. Yet her “inventive geography” prompts a wide range of interpretations, its open-endedness a stance she actively cultivates. The resultant mix of eclectic form and content is surprising as well as stimulating. As an African American artist, her practice explores the complex relationship between “race, culture and history” and, with it, ideas about classification and contingency, the rational and irrational, chaos, and order. Lisa Corinne Davis (b. 1958 in Baltimore, MD) lives and works in Brooklyn, NY.
