About the Item
Editorial illustration, Corporate Head Hunters, New York 1980.
Marvin Mattelson works in a photo-realistic mode that is very appropriate for cover illustration and for advertising clients. To this clarity, however, he often brings an element of unreality, rendered with the same degree of believable conviction – unsettling and arresting to the casual viewer.
Mattelson was born in Philadelphia and is a graduate of the Philadelphia College of Art. After a brief foray into cartooning, he found his current style and a long list of clients. His cover art has been commissioned by Time, Life, Atlantic Monthly, National Lampoon, and Psychology Today, and for many advertising accounts.
He has taught at the School of Visual Arts for several years, and his pictures have been regularly exhibited in annual shows at the Society of Illustrators in New York.
