Nan Hass Feldman
"Escape to the Island", expressionist, house, boats, red, acrylic painting

1993

About the Item

Nan Hass Feldman's "Escape to the Islands" 48 x 69 inch acrylic painting on canvas is a highly dramatic expressionist painting which is a tour-de-force especially when seen from a distance. It is powerful in its subject, a floating house surrounded by a circle of water and boats looking at it from land, as if the subject is lit from a stage. Motion, lighting, colors, and subject are an amalgam or a mixture components painted as an homage to the visual artists in history that Nan loves; David Hockney, Matisse, Raoul Dufy, and Jennifer Bartlett. The colors are bright and bold and feature reds, blues, and touches of yellow, green, and black. This is one painting that dramatically fills a large space and is a major work by this artist. Nan Hass Feldman has been a full-time artist for over 45 years. Her works, whether Landscapes or Interiors are interpreted through her screen of selective seeing, playful detail, heightened color, and bits of fantasy. Nan’s work is always vibrantly colorful, intricate, enlivening, and upbeat. For Nan, art really is about enhancing and interpreting reality to create a more optimistic and emotional world. Nan’s work has been collected in seven countries, holds a BFA, MA, MFA degrees, teaches in three art museums, runs international painting programs, and runs the Artist Loft on a cruise ship. Feldman is represented by Fountain Street Gallery in Boston, MA.

These aspects of film can overwhelm a painting, thus distancing the viewer from the art. She wants the art to be dominant; “Painting wins,” she declares. She finds this happens when a painting possesses what she terms “classical balance.” By this the artist means that everything is where it needs to be compositionally—nothing can be changed—and “the whole can be seen at once.” Linda Blackburn...
