Nicola Viso
Paint Oil on canvas Landscape Italy Art18th Century Capriccio Architectural

1700-1750

About the Item

Nicola Viso (active in Naples in the first half of the 18th century) Architectural capriccio with temple in ruins and scene of the rest of the Holy Family Neapolitan school of the eighteenth century oil on canvas, 38 x 64 cm With a valuable period frame cm. 50 x 75 For obvious stylistic and qualitative reasons, this composition is to be attributed to the pictorial production of the Neapolitan Nicola Viso, supported by confirmation of the particular typology of the figures, as well as by the inventiveness and execution of the architectures. It is a highly representative work of the Face, as all aspects of its versatile personality are happily gathered in it: the landscape painter painter of ancient ruins with the figurist. The subject also falls within the typical compositions of the painter, who used to combine suggestive architectural whims with religious themes; in our case the architectural ruins of an imposing temple are the backdrop to the rest of the Holy Family, accompanied by three fluttering angels. A clear and airy atmosphere, the articulation of the landscape, the delicate chromatic harmony and brightness, suggest a dating around the mid-eighteenth century. The painting is presumably the pendant of the work proposed by Christie's (Old Master Paintings, Milan, Palazzo Clerici 28 November 2007), depicting a similar architectural whim, with the same measures, and with the episode of the Visitation. Landscape See Paint Oil on canvas Flemish Old master 18th Century Italian Art
Located in Riva del Garda, IT
Flemish painter active in Italy in the eighteenth century Coastal landscape of the Mediterranean with architectures and figures Oil painting on canvas (69 x 88 cm., in frame 80 x 100 cm.) The suggestive view proposed depicts a coastal view with a bay and the ruins of an ancient building, probably a monastery or a church, and in the background another building with a garden surrounded by high walls close to the shore. The type of landscape, typical of the southern Italian environment, and the intimate atmosphere that welcomes the scene, attributes the authorship of the work to a landscape painter active in the eighteenth century, presumably in Italy in this period, with immediate references to the Dutch school , and in particular to the production of Jacob de Heusch and above all of Gaspar van Wittel, considered the progenitor of Italian landscape painting. In fact, in the rendering of the architectural details, in the purity with which the buildings have been reconstructed, as well as in the atmosphere that encompasses the entire landscape, a marked correspondence to the so-called "Vanvitellian realism" can be seen: in fact, a comparison with a certain series of views which the Dutchman...

Galante Scene Vermeer d'Utrecht Paint Oil on canvas 18th Century Flemish Old Art
Located in Riva del Garda, IT
Flemish painter of the 18th century - Follower of Jan van der Meer, called Vermeer d'Utrecht (Schoonhoven, verses 1630 - 1692) Courtship scene at the entrance of an inn oil on canvas, 70 x 62 cm. (with frame 80 x 72 cm.) This pleasant genre scene, depicting a young innkeeper conversing amiably with a gentleman as she prepares to serve him wine in a glass goblet that she still holds in her hand, is inspired by the painting made in 1653 by the Dutch painter Jan van der Meer, known as Vermeer d'Utrecht, and today kept in Paris at the Louvre Museum. Set outside an inn or a post station, the scene illustrates the theme of seduction, with the young waitress being courted by the client, a charming traveler with a changing red cloak, who tries to charm her. Yes, it is a work that harmoniously combines the painter's Dutch origins, with the stylistic characters learned during his training in his homeland, with the Italian-like characters learned during his trip to Italy around 1655. In Rome, in particular, he met and collaborated with various authors of the Bamboccianti school, first of all Jan Miel...

Roos Landscape Myth Mercury Horse Paint Oil on canvas Old master 17th Century
Located in Riva del Garda, IT
Johann Heinrich Roos (Otterberg 1631 - Frankfurt 1685) Landscape with the myth of Mercury and Batto (from Ovid's Metamorphoses) Oil painting on canvas 101 x 159 cm. With frame 115 x 174 cm. The work represents the mythological episode, taken from Ovid's Metamorphoses (Ovid, Metamorphoses, II, 676-707), and precisely when the god Mercury, taking advantage of a moment in which Apollo leaves his herd alone, steals some heifers and then hides them in a ravine. The only witness to the theft is the old Batto, a shepherd in charge of looking after the purebred horses of the rich Neleus, king of Pilo and who, in exchange for a heifer, guarantees the God not to be a spy, swearing to him that he will remain silent as a stone. . Immediately distrusting of his words, Mercury decides to test his honesty: he presents himself in front of him with another aspect, asking him if he had seen a herd pass by, and offering him in exchange for this information a bull and a heifer. Batto, who is immediately tempted by this new and more convenient offer, indicates without hesitation where the animals were hidden. As Ovid well illustrates in his poem 'the Metamorphoses', whoever betrays the trust or benevolence of a God is forced to a bitter fate, and so Batto is transformed by Mercury into a stone, remaining silent for eternity just as he had promised. The scene represents the moment when Mercury is offering Batto a heifer, which he indicates with his hand, in exchange for his loyalty. The divinity is perfectly recognizable due to his classical attributes, the winged helmet and shoes and above all the caduceus, the winged staff with two twisted snakes, which he will use to transform the shepherd into a stone. The figurative and exhibition peculiarities of this valuable painting...
