  • II (Urban Hieroglyphics Series)
    Located in New Orleans, LA
    Born in New Orleans, Horton Humble is a self-taught American painter. His debut show in 2007, entitled Debris, featured a series of paintings using wood from the Hurricane Katrina wreckage centered on themes of a lost city and water as a powerful force. In 2008, he embarked on a one-year journey through Africa for his next series Transit Urban, which included twelve paintings using local traditional fabrics depicting the energy of the people, land and culture. Each piece was drafted on site and later accompanied him on his other travels from Europe to US. Enchanted by the old and mestizo city, he returned to Lisbon in 2012 where he lived for almost three years and created The Lisbon Series influenced by the discovery of a new medium; ceramics and its modeling techniques. After this productive period in Portugal, Humble again returned home and established his studio with a group of fellow artists in New Orleans and co-founded the Level Artist Collective in 2015. At this time, his paintings on wood panels captured his impressions of a post- Katrina city represented inside of human head figures transitioning his previous subject matter into a new territory (US) and its social problematic. In 2017, Horton Humble was a resident artist at the Joan Mitchell Center in New Orleans and named “one of the most talented young painters producing in the South today” by Bradley Sumrall, curator of the Ogden Museum of Southern Art (Curator's Choice, Country Roads Magazine). Through the summer he created his first public sculpture in steel, The Guardian, commissioned by the Helis Foundation for the Pyodras Corridor project- Sculpture for New Orleans. Currently, Humble is creating his most ambitious work, large-scale canvases in which he is releasing the formality of his detail obsession into a more dynamic and expressive work.     12 x 12 1/2 inches framed Greta Van Campen is known for her geometric hard-edged graphic approach to representation. She has traveled across the United States sourcing inspiration from the landscapes, small towns, and cities. Now, with a young family, she gets most of her inspiration close to home. Scenic ocean views and paintings of flowers from her gardens make up the bulk of her new work. She paints in her home studio, beginning each piece with a photograph she has taken. She uses the photo as a reference while drawing from memories of her experiences, sometimes also working from sketches done on location. The image is translated into a painting by first setting large compositional elements and then finding shapes and masking off areas with tape, mixing the desired color of paint, and continuing to tape and paint until the desired amount of detail is reached. This distilled and stylized approach imbues her traditional subject matter with a freshness and modernity. As Van Campen explains, she “figure(s) out how to recreate a version of the natural, atmospheric place by turning it into a more geometric, color and balance-driven scene that is hopefully appealing, interesting, and authentic.” Van Campen was born in and resides in Maine. She received her BFA from Bowdoin College, ME. She is represented by Octavia Art Gallery, LA & TX, and Dowling Walsh Gallery...
