Alfred Jensen
Early two sided figurative painting with separate portraits by renowned painter

1947

About the Item

Alfred Jensen Untitled two sided painting, 1947 2-sided gouache painting on board (one portrait is vertical; the other horizontal) 29 × 23 7/20 inches Signed and dated in paint on the front of the horizontal image Unique Unframed Rare early work by Alfred Jensen from the late 1940s. Two sided painting with a different portrait on each side. Acquired from the estate of Jerome Goodman, collector and personal friend of the artist who acquired this directly from Jensen This very early painting - from 1947 - is fascinating because even though Jensen would later become known for his geometric abstractions, one can already see here the Cubist influence in his early figurative work. ALFRED JENSEN BIOGRAPHY Alfred Jensen studied painting at the San Diego Fine Arts School and in Munich under Hans Hofmann. After moving to the United States in 1934, his patron Saidie Alder May encouraged him to pursue his interest in color theory and pattern. Jensen's intricately organized diagrams reflect his distinctive conceptual approach, begun in the late 1950s when he started to refine his wide-ranging studies of systems and philosophies—from theories of color and light, mathematics, and the Mayan calendar, to scientific formulations—into multicolored checkerboards. He used mathematical systems to construct two-dimensional grid paintings and demonstrate color theories, but the work itself is metaphorical, referencing pre-Colombian and Asian cultures, textiles, and divination. -Courtesy of PACE Gallery

  • Early Mid Century Modern Self Portrait by renowned Abstract Expressionist Signed
    By Ron Gorchov
    Located in New York, NY
Ron Gorchov Historic Self Portrait, 1955-1959 Oil painting on board Hand signed in paint on the upper recto and dated 1955-9 Frame included: held in original vintage artist's frame This work was exhibited at the Sager Reeves Gallery in Columbia, Missouri in their Masters Exhibit in December, 2022, and is reproduced as a full page in their exhibition catalogue. A copy of this catalogue accompanies the artwork. In 2019, the year before Ron Gorchov passed away, Stephen Truax, director of Cheim & Read, his then gallery, passed along details of this extraordinary painting to Gorchov's studio to be included in the forthcoming catalogue raisonne. When shown the work, Gorchov remembered it well, but was amazed that the painting was still in existence after so many years. This historic early self-portrait, done over a period of four years, from 1955-1959, starting when he was only 25 years old reveals Gorchov's distinctive and sophisticated sense of color and form. This is one of the artist's earliest works, and very few works by Gorchov from this era ever appear on the market or are known to remain in existence. It should be in any museum or career retrospective. This work was gifted by the artist to Elthea Rembrandt Peale...

San Francisco Abstract Expression A free-spirited wave of creative energy swept through the San Francisco art community after World War II. Challenging accepted modes of painting, Abstract Expressionists produced highly experimental works that jolted the public out of its postwar complacency. Abstract Expressionism resulted from a broad collective impulse rather than the inspiration of a small band of New York artists. Documenting the interchanges between the East and West Coasts, she cites areas of mutual influence and shows the impact of San Francisco on the New York School, including artists such as Mark Rothko and Ad Reinhardt.
