Angels Grau
Invisible Women Negre

2023

About the Item

Angels Grau is a Catalan artist who spends her time between Barcelona, New York, and a small village located in the breathtaking Priorat, one of the most notorious wine regions in Europe. This combination allows her to have the best of three worlds; it brings together the creativity and passion that her paintings demand. "I invest time in my work. You must look at paintings on different days, with different eyes. There is a need to go back to it again and again.” Born to a family of artists, she grew up surrounded by drawings, tapestries, and paintings that awakened a special sentiment that over time matured into her work. A graphic designer first and painter by evolution, in 2018 she decided to make the leap into becoming a full-time artist. Nothing has deterred her since. After traveling the world and bringing up four children who are almost living their own lives, the artist feels the need to empower the role of women inspired by her own journey. “Invisible Women” is a tribute to each and every woman that fights from anonymous positions, in everyday jobs and everyday lives, to improve their family, their society, their world. Some of her pieces are part of the personal art collections of different CEOs of fortune 100 companies. “Invisible Women” is part of a recent purchase by the PepsiCo Foundation. Roseann Proseer, PepsiCo Collections Fine Art Curator has said: “We are honored at PepsiCo to have one of Angels Grau’s paintings, “Invisible Women”, hanging in our headquarters; the work evokes feelings for all strong women that make life, family and love happen.” On the occasion of women's day, PepsiCo has given an Invisible Woman to the PepsiCo Vietnam headquarters and another to the PepsiCo Illinois factory. In its short history, Angels Grau has been exhibited in Barcelona, Greenwich, the Consulate General of Brazil in New York, and Kate Oh’s Gallery in Manhattan. As the Brazilian General Consulate in NY, Ambassador Maria Nazareth Farani Azevêdo said " Angel's art has had a lot of success with architects, decorators and diplomats like me as I have a wonderful painting from her at my own home."

  • Pacifier III
    By Do Byung-Kyu
    Located in New York, NY
The medium of choice for Do Byung-Kyu, born in Cheonan, Korea, is dolls: they are both his conceptions and his physical expression. At the same time dolls are also the perfect tool for communicating the artist’s inner self. Expressing himself by means of dolls liberates Do from the restrictions of the mundane world. By embodying in the form of dolls his actions and thoughts, dreams and desires, and even the instincts lying in the depths of the subconscious, he transcends the secular boundaries. Dolls are his alter ego, his other self that he can construct precisely the way he wants. Sublimating the experiences and memories from his youth into various subjects of desire, Do uses dolls to paint a descriptive picture of the ambiguous feelings of contradictions from his childhood when he would abuse and kill a plaything, for example a frog, then bury the body in solemn mourning over its death. These sexual or violent games from his childhood are not likely to be limited to Do’s experiences alone. Most of us can vaguely remember indulging in sadistic acts of sexual love against a doll. Rising above a child’s simple curiosity, it is an intuitive game of the senses we play by ourselves. In a number of Do’s paintings, sticky liquid can be observed dripping down a doll’s face. This brings back recollections of the life inside our mothers’ womb where we were also enveloped by mucous waters, like the amniotic fluid. It refuses contact with the anything, and nothing wants to touch it either. The shape of such a mucous liquid is a protective layer sheltering the intrinsic identity and desires of man. It is also a substitution that satisfies the ego’s instincts otherwise suppressed by social norms. The dolls’ eyes...

"My Blue Peace" features hues of orange, blue and yellow. 24 by 20 inches framed Sachi Rome is inspired by the works of Gerhard Richter, Deborah Dancy, Ed Clark, M. Florine Démosthène, Morel Doucet and Kassou Seydou. Sachi Rome is a painter and a mixed media artist who views her process as a ritual. Utilizing expressive mark making, movement and texture through an experimental use of tools and materials, she creates a visual dialogue that explores spaces for Black people to exist without fear. Connections between identity, memory and African spirituality are entry points for creating a protected and safe space, free from the contrived world that fights to sustain the deception that Black bodies are a threat, and thus unworthy of peaceful existence. Her subjects are colorful, textured figures living in a visual space left open and void of outside negative forces. In creating visual avatars of these souls, she is regifting them with life, presence and audience. They are at home in their space and assured of a rarefied and precious safety, scarcely afforded to and felt by Black people. It is within her work that she offers portals and talismans of hope, healing and protection. Sachi Rome was born, raised, lives and works in Atlanta, Georgia. She graduated with a Bachelor of Education from Morris Brown...
