About the Item
‘Reine on Clay’ is a medium size contemporary mixed media on fabric-wrapped board figurative painting created by Dutch artist Casper Faassen in 2015. Created during an extended trip to India and made of a thick 800 gram cardboard, this piece depicts an elegant woman, seen in profile. Casper used local clay with its original pigments of rust and greys for the background while the female figure is a silk screen print accented with hand-painted details. Perfectly restrained, the painting strikes by the purity of its lines, the simplicity of its means and its contrasting colors. The woman, drawn with white outlines that stand out beautifully on the dark background, is looking down, pensively. The painting is set on a board wrapped in a black fabric, and is signed along the right side. With its nice proportions, exquisite subject and minimalist quality, this Dutch mixed media figurative portrait painting will bring a subtle sense of introspection to any home, whether placed above a credenza, console table or chest-of-drawers.
Faassen (born in 1975) is a painter and photographer who lives and works in Leiden, The Netherlands. Since 2002, Casper has been gaining a very fast and broad recognition through his solo and group exhibitions in galleries and art fairs. In 2003, he came in second to Corneille in the Dutch Artist of the Year Election. In 2007, he was awarded Talent of the Year in that same competition. His works have been exhibited in many solo exhibitions, group shows and art fairs in Belgium, Switzerland, Italy, The Netherlands, Germany, Hong Kong, New York and Chicago. In addition to many private and corporate collections, Casper’s work is included in some public collections such as the Royal Library in The Hague.
Portraits, landscapes, nudes, still lives and flowers, all traditional 17th century Dutch painterly subjects, are translated in his unique figurative language. His paintings can be seen as large-scale drawings on walls or ‘objets trouvés’. Beauty is his central theme. The silent, eternal and beautiful is set against a background of apparent decay: the Vanitas. Decay is visible in the handling of materials, not necessarily in the subject presented. His photographs are built up like paintings with different imaginary and physical layers, giving the viewer a feeling of distance and at the same time a voyeuristic presence. Both the paintings and the photo works are purified and rich at the same time, striving to have iconic value.
