About the Item

Endre Roder was born in Budapest, Hungary in 1933 and as a young child moved to Malta, a place that inspired his love of art. He began to study art in Malta when he was in his teens. His family moved to England in 1949. He continued to paint while pursuing an academic career in England, his speciality developing from teaching art to art history to post graduate level. His knowledge of several centuries of artists and their work is, of course, encyclopaedic. The casual observer detects the influence of various major figures in his work but a few minutes conversation rapidly expands this into a roll call of figures, great and not so great. Endre later moved to Swanage which he enjoys because of the remarkable light and seascapes. His work continues to be shown at a number of London galleries and selected locations around the country and abroad. Endré Röder paintings are fabulous paintings acquired by collectors around the world. His wonderfully colourful palette compliments the soft gaze of the female models who are coy and mysterious as their eyes don’t quite meet your gaze. Röder’s enlivening palette and bold definition of form celebrates the female mystique. Röder draws from a wide knowledge of historical reference to inform his carefully considered figurative compositions. He demonstrates a fluent eye for decoration with a bold use of colour, capturing a fascinating sense of storytelling set within imaginary landscapes rich with symbolism and narrative. Admired worldwide, his work is held in a vast range of national and international collections. Endre cites Kirchner and Balthus as influences but his paintings certainly demonstrate that he has followed his own course, immune from the fashions and tendencies which have come and gone in British art. If asked about influences he laconically suggests, “Think Paris, early twentieth century.” His stunning work is highly collectable and has been likened to both Picasso and Gauguin.
