About the Item

"Moonlit: Blue I" (2022) color pencil and acrylic wash on Arches paper, mounted on cradled wood panel Contemporary academic realism, hyperrealistic portrait, woman, face, electric blue tones 14" high x 11" wide x 1" deep by Erica Rose Levine ABOUT THE ARTIST: Artist and illustrator Erica Rose Levine is a New York city native. She completed her BFA at the School of Visual Arts in NYC. Working primarily with colored pencils, graphite, acrylic and markers, Levine achieves an impressive quality of hyperrealism in her work with a minimal use of media. Her drawings luxuriate in painstaking detail, delivering impressive textures and convincing tactility. Beautifully rendered and expertly executed, Levine's drawings are inspired by women's use of decoration and beauty as power. She is interested in the way women define themselves with jewelry, hairstyles and accessories and loves all that glitters and grows. Her portraits of imposingly regal women harness the fantastical as well as the force that is feminine beauty across time and place. Levine embellishes her portraits with luxurious details, each image capturing a ritual-like instance of adornment. She is fascinated by the mutability of identity and how a personal aesthetic is an aspect of self-definition. Ornamentation is a vehicle for transformation, fantasy and self-definition, whether in the form of an elaborate hairstyle, luxe fabrics, dramatic make-up or evocative jewelry. Through her unique style of portraiture, Levine captures the unassailable armor that is beauty. Her work has been exhibited nationally, including at Thinkspace Art (Los Angeles, Honolulu and Berlin), Roq La Rue Gallery (Seattle), Strychnin Gallery (Berlin), Auguste Clown Gallery (Melbourne), Deep Space Gallery (Jersey City) and more. She has been featured in multiple publications, including but not limited to Juxtapoz, High Fructose, Urban Nation, Jezebel, Artsy, and Logi Cult. Levine works out of her studio at MANA Contemporary in Jersey City, NJ.

Like the Westerns I grew up with, my own work is camouflaged in a veil of nostalgia. The figures in my work are often portrayed against a stark background. This forces the viewer to recognize the myth before the critique exposes itself. I work from observation and my imagination using watercolor and traditional printmaking methods. The figurative images I create are heavily researched. By using the West, a subject that I am both familiar with and continue to question, I aim to engage with our inherent perceptions of the past and the myths embedded within. - Jed Webster Smith
