Biography:
Francesc Serra Castellet. Barcelona 1912 - Tossa de Mar (Girona) 1976.
This Catalan painter spent his childhood and youth in Granollers. Although he frequented the Cercle Artistic de Sant Lluc and attended the LLotja school for a short time, he is considered self-taught.
At first he worked as an advertising draftsman and portrait painter and collaborated with literary publications in Granollers.
In 1933 he presented his first individual exhibition at the Sala Pares in Barcelona. In this city he will subsequently exhibit regularly in various galleries, especially in the Gaspar Hall. He also made his work known in important group exhibitions, artistic contests and Spring Salons. He obtained, among other awards, the Silver medal of the National Fine Arts of Madrid in 1943, the Silver medal of the "Sant Jordi" Contest of 1951 and the Gold medal of the same Contest of the year 1953, as well as the award granted by the City Council of the same city.
The theme of his painting is mainly the female figure. Figures from the back, in profile, sitting, standing, moving, etc. In the work of Francesc Serra, as an admirer of Degas that he was, a great influence of this French artist is evident. Occasionally he also made urban landscapes, such as the works made in Paris, exhibited in 1953. This same year he published his essay "The Adventure of Contemporary Art" where he defended the traditional figurative aesthetics against the excess of the avant-garde.
Francesc Serra's palette is warm, refined and with soft tones. With a firm and sure line, his drawings and oils show great elegance and skill. A simple everyday moment transforms it as if nothing else into a work of great beauty and full of sensations, creating at the same time a special atmosphere.
Francesc Serra's work is represented at the MNAC Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya, the Mapfre Foundation Collection and the Amyc Foundation, among others. It also appears in public and private collections in Barcelona, Madrid, Bilbao, Valencia, London, Milan, Rome, Florence, Padua, Paris, Lyon, Zurich, Lausanne, Frankfurt, Stockholm, New York, San Francisco, Chicago and Boston.
In 1977, a year after his death, the Sala Pares dedicated a tribute exhibition to him.
