circa 1930

About the Item

Frans Smeers (1873-1960) Portrait of an artist, signed lower right (partially hidden by the frame) 42.5 x 36 cm Framed : 50 x 43.5 cm This work is typical of Smeers' post-impressionist style, as found in his famous beach scenes for example. It gives its full effect in the nervous and lively rendering of this artist's portrait. Frans Smeers was born in Brussels on January ,1873 - Brussels, June 1, 1960), his complete name was François, Emile, Isidore, Léopold Smeers. He studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels, with Jean-François Portaels and Joseph Stallaert. He was one of the founding members of the Cercle "le Sillon", for which he designed the posters for the sixth and seventh Salon (Brussels, 1899 & 1900). Member of the Belgian National Council of Plastic Arts (CNAP). He taught from 1933 to 1946 at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels, where his students included Nicolas de Staël and Médard -Siegfried Tytgat,. He lived mainly in the Brussels region (in Brussels itself, in Ixelles and Saint-Gilles), but stayed from 1915 to 1919 in London and then in the Netherlands. He created numerous portraits, including those of painter friends or his family, his wife and his four daughters. Close to nature, he was often inspired by the landscapes of the North Sea, particularly those of Nieuwpoort and Ostend. He painted many bright and colorful beach scenes. Throughout his career, he exhibited in a large number of fairs, mostly in Brussels, but also in Ghent, Ostend, Barcelona, Brighton, Geneva, London, Munich (where he obtained a gold medal in 1913), Paris (in particular at the Salon des Independants and the Salons of the Société nationale des beaux-arts), at the Venice Biennale... French Romantic School, 19th Century Portrait of a man, a selfportrait ? oil on paper 17.5 x 12 cm oval Framed under glass : 43 x 34.5 cm This rather mysterious portrait is perhaps a self-portrait of the artist who painted it. This is suggested by the three-quarter pose and the gaze fixed on the viewer. What this man seems to be staring at is himself. Similarly, the model's appearance is reminiscent of the image of the romantic, bohemian, tortured artist. It's also very interesting that he used a range of dark colours to reinforce this idea of melancholy. It has been suggested that this small oil on paper is close to the art of François Bonvin (1817-1887) and Théodule Ribot...

ERWIN BINDEWALD (1897-1950) Two men playing draughts, a girl with the red book standing behind them Signed and dated E. Bindewald d.j., 27 Oil on canvas, 140.5 x 90.5 cm In black and gilt gesso frame. Note: Bindewald was born in Charlottenburg. He moved to Berlin in 1914 where he studied till 1924 at the Berliner Kunst Akademie. Bindewald travelled in Europe, but mainly stayed in Germany and certainly never was in China. This painting was made in Europe, presumably in the China Town of Berlin. Bindewald received several commisions in Germany from factory owners who wanted their factories painted inside, usually with workers, as well as outside. In the present painting the sitter on the right seems to be a man with a Manchurian background, wearing the brown coat reserved for the highest aristocracy in China. In China the black sleeve-ends completely cover the hands, indicating that the high aristocracy does not have to do any manuel labour. This man clearly is not a factory worker but he possibly is the (co)- owner of the factory in the background and as such might need his hands to do at least some writing. The man on the left in the modern Western suit...
