About the Item

Oil measures 41x33 cm. Frame measures 53x45 cm. Thanks to Mr. José Manuel Marín for confirming and dating the work (1930s). Ginés Parra (Zurgena, Almería, January 24, 1896 - Paris, April 19, 1960), whose real name was José Antonio Ramón Parra Menchón, was a Spanish painter. His family emigrated to Tlemcen, in Algeria, in 1901. There he spent his childhood and puberty and worked with his father as a miner. After several trips through Argentina and other South American countries, made between 1910 and 1916, he moved to the United States. He worked in some copper mines in Arizona to later settle in Los Angeles and soon moved to New York, where he began to receive classes at the Art Students League of New York. Later he began his art studies at the National Academy School of Fine Arts in the Big Apple, although he was forced to continue working on the subway and as a waiter to survive. Around 1920 he settled in Paris, in a studio in the Montparnasse neighborhood, to continue his training at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts. In the early days he continued, as always, working outside of art, this time as a car wash and store boy. However, soon after, during the golden years of art in the city, he was already dealing with other painters such as Pablo Picasso, Julio González or Manuel Ángeles Ortiz, and participated with them in various exhibitions, such as the one held by the Society of French Artists. , the Autumn Salon or the Salon des Independants. In 1927, he exhibited together with Joaquín Roca at the du Taureau gallery in Paris and, shortly after, one of his most praised works at the Salon des Independants, Leda y el cisne, was acquired by a Boston gallery. In the 1930s and 1940s his fame established and he distinguished himself as a member of the New School of Paris. However, proverbial financial problems forced him to get rid of his extensive art collection, which included works by Edgar Degas, Amedeo Modigliani, Armand Guillaumin and Picasso himself. The outbreak of the Civil War surprised him in Madrid, where he decidedly aligned himself with the Republican side, for which he was arrested. He only regained his freedom thanks to the intercession of Francisco Cossío. In the following years he traveled several times to Spain and exhibited in various cities in Europe (Prague, 1946, Brussels, 1947, Stockholm, 1947, London) and America (Lima, São Paulo, Mexico City, Havana, Buenos Aires). and in the Breteau and Monatler galleries (1948). In 1959 he exhibited together with Picasso at the Trouche gallery and with Óscar Domínguez in Brittany. That same year he was diagnosed with cancer and after several months of illness he died in Paris in April 1960. Shortly after, the Salón des Independientes dedicated an anthological exhibition to him and Picasso and other friends created the Society of Friends of Parra. After the artist died, his work has been exhibited in various shows and artistic institutions. Among them are the Kalman Gallery in London, some Australian museums, the Frontera gallery in Madrid, the room of the Caja de Ahorros del Sureste de España in Alicante, in his hometown, Zurgena, etc. Parra's paintings appear among others in the Narodní Muzeum in Prague, the Moravská Galerie in the city of Brno (Czech Republic), the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, the São Paulo Museum of Art, or in the Museum of Havana, and in the collections of numerous colleagues, among others, Picasso himself. It was not until 1974, however, when the first exhibition dedicated to the artist was held in Madrid. It is worth noting the organization that Caja Madrid celebrated in 1996 on the occasion of the centenary of his birth, Ginés Parra. A painter of the School of Paris. His work is figurative and simple, under whose simplicity, however, always underlies a great creative force. In his work, motifs ranging from the nude to the landscape are combined with architecture, still lifes and figures, passing through religious themes. His most characteristic technique is oil on canvas, used with synthetic and balanced forms and thick dark strokes that forcefully cut out the fields of color, resulting in works of great plasticity. Among those who most appreciated and influenced his painting are members of the New School of Paris, such as the aforementioned Picasso and Domínguez, the Spanish Francisco Bores, Joaquín Peinado, Orlando Pelayo, Hernando Viñes, the Chilean Eudaldo or the French Jean Le Moal.
