Henry Bacon
Oil Portrait of Man Playing Music with Horn

c. 1875

About the Item

Henry Bacon served as a soldier and war artist during the American Civil War, and was badly wounded in the Second Battle of Bull Run before he began his art career. He then studied in France, and became a member of the Pont-Aven School, painting genre subjects of French country life, many sold back in America. He first traveled to Egypt in 1897, and then developed an interest in Orientalist painting, soon spending his winters in the Middle East. This painting shows a man practicing music on a horn in a very rich colored room with lots of browns, reds, and other warm hues. This painting is amazing in including such important details like facial expressions and the specifics of this characters living. This late 19th century painting is signed, unframed, and is in excellent condition!
