Dutch interior scene Peasant girl sewing 19th century Oil painting

e.g. 1875-1895

About the Item

Signed bottom right: Jozef Israëls (1824 – 1911). Painting was certified by Pierre Noelmans of Reveil Galerie in Maastricht in early 1970s. Jozef Israëls, was best-known second half of the 19th century Dutch painter of scenes of peasant life. The scenes that gave him a big name were filled with images of deep meaning and a philosophical view of what is happening around, expressed through loneliness. Presumably, this painting was painted in his studio, which he built in the garden of his house on Koninginneweg in The Hague. Therefore, this painting beautifully and harmoniously combines a pleasant and calm interior with professionally selected colors, light and halftones. Oil painting on a wooden board. Size app.: 37.3 x 27.1 cm (roughly 14.7 x 10.7 in) and nice baroque frame ca 54 x 44.5 cm (roughly 21.3 x 18 in). Very Good condition, repairs and retouches. Please study good resolution images for overall cosmetic condition. Weight of app. 1,8 kg is going to measure some 3 kg volume weight packed for shipment. Jozef lsraёls, who grew up in Groningen (Netherlands) in а simple Jewish environment , went to the Kweekschool and from the age of 15 to the French School. ln the meant ime, he already took drawing and painting lessons at the Minerva Academy. At the age of eighteen, Joseph moved to Amsterdam, where he studied at Jan Adam Kruseman's studio and also attended evening classes at the Royal Academy under Jan Willem Pieneman. He also received training at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris, returning to Holland in 1847. After 1871, when he went to live in The Hague, he became close friends with Hendrik Willem Mesdag. Together t hey were involved in the founding of the Hollandsche Teekenmaatschappij in 1876. lsraёl's was one of the first members of Pulchri Studio. As one of the older painters of the Hague School, lsraёl's was known for his open mind and his great interest in new expressions in literature and visual arts, and, during his lifetime, "the most respected Dutch artist of the second half of the nineteenth century". His earliest works were romantic historical paintings, but after staying at Zandvoort in 1855 he concentrated on scenes with fishermen or peasants - which recall works by his contemporaries in France, especially Millet and Daumier. lsraёls working method was widely adopted in the 19th century, both with Dutch painters such as Van Gogh and Mondriaan, and with foreigners such as Мах Liebermann. In his later years Israëls lived in The Hague and became internationally famous, exhibiting in Paris and London as well as in Holland. In The Hague Jozef had а studio built with а 'fisherman's corner' and an Old Dutch window. Figures posed in а certain way posed in f ront of that window. This resulted in port raits and interiors with beautifu l light and dark effects. His later works include The Widower (in the Mesdag collection), When we grow Old, Peasant Family at the Table and Alone in the World (Van Gogh Museum / Amsterdam Gallery), An Interior (Dordrecht Gallery), A Frugal Meal (Glasgow museum), Toilers of the Sea, Speechless Dialogue, Between the Fields and the Seashore, The Bric-a-brac Seller (which gained medals of honor at the great Paris Exhibition of 1900).

  • Russian Modernist Сityscape Venetian Motive early 20th century Oil Painting
    Located in Stockholm, SE
Signed lower left: Vasily (Wilhelm) Filippovich Levi (1878 - 1954). The uncommon view of Venice was depicted by gifted artist in even more modernism manner than his other works of same period. IMO this one worth special acceptance being very rare and highly desired masterwork. The scorching sun gilds the sparkling expanse of the canal with its rays. At this hour the city is empty. Calm waves gently lap against the keel of the gondola. The artist perfectly transferred to the canvas the atmospheric idyll and romantic magic of old Venice. Oil painting on wood, signed, framed. Size app.: 47 x 64 cm (roughly 18.5 x 25.2 in) and beautiful antique frame ca 64.5 x 81 cm (roughly 25.4 x 31.9 in). Very Good condition, ready to hang condition, age wear (just minor wear to frame finish). Please study good resolution images for overall cosmetic condition. In person actual painting may appear darker or brighter than in our pictures, strictly depending on sufficient light in your environment. Weight of app. 3.2 kg is going to measure some 5 kg packed for shipment. V. F. Levi - lawyer, collector, and also an artist. He spent his childhood in Riga, studied at the Alexander Gymnasium. He graduated from the 1st Kharkov Gymnasium (1899) and the Faculty of Law of Kharkov University. In 1916 he moved to Terijoki, built a house there and decided to devote himself to art. In 1918, on the advice of I. I. Brodsky, he showed his works to I. E. Repin and received his approval. After some time, he became Repin's confidant: during 1919-1930, he organized more than 50 Repin exhibitions in Helsinki, Prague, The Hague, Hamburg, Nice, Cannes and other European cities. In 1930-1939 he lived in Paris. In 1930 he participated in the Exhibition of Paintings by Russian Masters...

  • Grandpa and Naughty Boy Danish Master Genre Scene 19th century Signed Framed
    By Erik Ludwig Henningsen
    Located in Stockholm, SE
Signed lower right “Henningsen” and dated 1881 at reverse. Attributed by Erik Ludvig Henningsen (1855 - 1930) was a Danish painter and illustrator. Masterly painted genre scene “testing grandfather’s pipe” depicting lively domestic moment. The little prankster wants to be like his grandfather, but how can he not try his grandfather’s pipe, which he loves so much and does not let go of even in his sleep. The curious and brave sly man, despite the consequences, took off his shoes to approach quietly... One can imagine his disappointment and emotions after he accomplished what he had planned... The boy's faithful friend, a small dog, looks at all this with interest and curiosity. Loved and admired for his talent to realistically portray life and tell a story at the same time, Henningsen took great pride to never include any personal feelings or philosophy, but to stay neutral to the subject matter for whichever painting he was doing. Antique oil painting on canvas, signed, framed. Size: 43 cm x 35 cm (roughly 16.9 x 13.8 in), frame 52 x 43.5 cm (roughly 20.5 x 17.1 in). Very Good pristine condition with minimal wear. Please study good resolution images for cosmetic condition. In person actual painting may appear darker or brighter than in our pictures, strictly depending on sufficient light in your environment. Weight of app. 1 kg is going to measure some 2 kg packed for shipment. Erik Henningsen was educated at the Copenhagen Royal Academy of Art. He Traveled and studied in Germany, Italy, France and Holland, and received numerous awards and medals throughout Europe. He later became a member of the Royal Academy of Art. Exhibited in Charlottenborg, Copenhagen, Vienna, Paris, Berlin, Munich, Lubeck, and many more. Erik Henningsen is always mentioned in the same breath as his older brother, painter Frants Henningsen. Both with their traditionally classic approach to realism, anecdotal undertones and bold use of dark colors, they were the most loved and celebrated illustrators of life and times; often depicting the hardships and trials of that day and age. One of Erik Henningsen’s large...

PROVENANCE Dr. Katherine Kromm Merritt, Stamford, Connecticut, until circa 1990, from whom acquired by Private Collection, Vinalhaven, Maine, until 2015 In the warm morning glow of a country kitchen, a young boy entertains his little sister seated in a high chair. In return her adoring glance speaks volumes. The dramatic angling of the baby’s high chair, whose design harks back to the seventeenth century, animates the scene. Through an economy of means and a limited palette of largely brown and orange, Jacob Simon Hendrik Kever captures the richness of the moment and its idyllic rusticity. Josef Israels was the first to encourage Kever to study painting. He began his training at the Koninklijke Academie voor Beeldende Kunsten, Amsterdam, in 1869, studying with Petrus Franciscus Greive until 1872. From 1874 - 1875 he attended the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten, also in Amsterdam. From 1878-1879 under the tutelage of Charles Verlat he was enrolled in the Koninklijke Acaemie voor Schone Kunsten in Antwerp. His subjects included portraits, cityscapes, landscapes, flowers, genre and interior scenes in watercolors, oils, and etchings. Throughout his career he worked in Blaricum, Nunspeet, the province of North Brabant and Eemnes. Although not technically considered a member of the Laren School he also lived there from 1877-1879 and again in 1905-1922. He further maintained an apartment in Amsterdam near the Oosterpark where he resided during the winter months. The area must have constituted somewhat of an artist’s community as his neighbors were Geo Poggenbeek, Nicolaas Bastert and later Willem Witsen...
