Liberty Icon

2017

About

An original signed acrylic on canvas painting by American artist Jack Graves (1988-) titled "Liberty Icon", 2017. Hand signed, titled, and dated on verso of canvas. Part of Graves' 2017 "Icon" series. Canvas size: 36" x 28". Mint condition. The Statue of Liberty (Liberty Enlightening the World; French: La Liberté éclairant le monde) is a colossal neoclassical sculpture on Liberty Island in New York Harbor in New York City, in the United States. The copper statue, a gift from the people of France to the people of the United States, was designed by French sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi and built by Gustave Eiffel. The statue was dedicated on October 28, 1886. The Statue of Liberty is a robed female figure representing Libertas, the Roman goddess. She holds a torch above her head, and in her left arm carries a tabula ansata inscribed in Roman numerals with "JULY IV MDCCLXXVI" (July 4, 1776), the date of the U.S. Declaration of Independence. A broken chain lies at her feet. The statue became an icon of freedom and of the United States, and was a welcoming sight to immigrants arriving from abroad. JACK GRAVES: Jack Graves was born in 1988 in Jacksonville, FL. He spent much of his adolescence in his father's art gallery, Graves International Art, surrounded by a diversity of artworks from Albrecht Durer to Andy Warhol. He began producing works from an early age, and later studied art history and fine art at The Blue Ridge School, Newcastle University in England, and Hampden-Sydney College. At The Blue Ridge School Graves won the Departmental Award for his art. During his tenure at Newcastle University he was selected to produce the artwork for the Annual Ball. And, at Hampden- Sydney College, he was commissioned to create the cover art for their annual book of poetry, "The Garnet". Since 2011, Jack has exhibited in Manhattan and on both coasts of The United States. Also, recognized in Germany, France and England, his works are now in collections internationally. In recent years Graves has been engaged in commercial projects producing album cover artwork for musicians and creating large scale murals for businesses and corporations. Working in his studio, he is diligently honing his skill and attention towards a new art form, “Eclecticism”. Graves states, “An “Eclecticism” work uses two or more different art styles, some from the past, incorporating new ones I develop for the future, presenting a totally new original artwork.”. Graves seeks to unveil this new series of iconoclastic works, "The Icon Series" by early 2017.
