James Edward Barclay
Portrait of William Willis - Royal Marines Major - 19th century art oil painting

About the Item

This impressive late 19th century portrait oil painting is by British artist James Edward Barclay. The sitter is a Major in the Royal Marines, William Wynch George Back Willis who was born in 1838 and died in 1910. The composition hints at a story behind this portrait, with a notebook or sketch book just in view and pencil in hand. Is he an aspiring artist? Or about to write a letter? The profile perspective is interesting along with his half-unbuttoned jacket but turned head and full gaze at the viewer. A fascinating portrait. Signed top right. Provenance. Sussex estate.
