A native of the Loire-Atlantique region, Jean Bouchaud is the grandson of Léon Bouchaud, a painter from Nantes who was close to Camille Corot and Henri Harpignies. He trained at the Académie Julian before going on to teach there himself. He was one of the artists whom historian Louis Hautecoeur called "the painters of French Africa".
After the First World War, Jean Bouchaud travelled throughout the Maghreb, sub-Saharan Africa and Indochina. Winner of the Abd-el-Tif prize in Algiers in 1921, he became a resident at the eponymous villa. He also exhibited regularly at Parisian art fairs and received several official commissions for large-scale decorative projects that established his reputation. The Georges Petit gallery gave him an exhibition in 1929.
Jean Bouchaud's painting bears witness to a vanished political geography, that of the French colonial empire of the 1920s and 40s. For more than ten years, like an ethnologist, he captured the essence of the faraway cultures he observed so closely. He documented the daily lives of many different ethnic groups, capturing them from life with a great sense of composition. The faces of the people he portrays are highly expressive.
