This stunning French Victorian portrait oil painting is by noted exhibited female artist Jeanne Rongier. This delicately detailed portrait is of the head and shoulders of a beautiful young woman, gazing to her right. Painted from a low vantage point looking up, the background is a superb canopy of illuminated green and yellow leaves with the light shining through them and all around her. Her dark glossy hair against the light drenched leaves is beautiful in a very Victorian Pre Raphaelite tone. A thoroughly charming portrait oil painting by a noted French Victorian female artist depicting a female sitter Signed, dated and indistinctly inscribed 'J.Rongier/L--s Clos.1900' lower left. Provenance. London estate. Condition. Oil on canvas. Unframed size is 21 inches by 17 inches and in good condition. Frame. Housed in a complementary frame. Framed size is 28 inches by 24 inches and in good condition. Jeanne Rongier (1852-1929) was a French painter. Rongier was born in Mâcon where she took lessons from Henri Senart in her home town. She later took lessons from Henri Joseph Harpignies, and Evariste Vital Luminais in Paris. She is known for historic genre works after old masters such as Frans Hals and Jacob Duck. From 1869 she exhibited in Paris at the Salon, then at the Salon of the Societe of Artists Francais, of which she became a member in 1883. She received an honourable mention in 1884, a third class medal in 1887 and an honourable mention in 1900 at the Exposition Universalle. Rongier exhibited her work at the Pennsylvania Building, the Palace of Fine Arts and The Woman's Building at the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago, Illinois. Her painting Sitting for a portrait in 1806, was included in the 1905 book Women Painters of the World.
