J.M. Robert
"Au Jour Le Jour" Black & White Portrait Street Art Pop Abstract Painting Canvas

2023

About the Item

This particular piece depicts an anonymous portrait of a beautiful woman in Black and White, titled "Au Jour Le Jour" translating to "From Day to Day". Inspired by the every day, JM Robert strives to create paintings that mimic the flash of a beautiful face seen in an instant and vanishing the next into the crowd. With a strong composition, JM hand paints each face in black paint, achieving this vanishing effect by incorporating his background into the main feature portrait. His skill for painting is highly noted, as there is no room for error on his canvases. Done with beautiful bursts of expressive colors and a distinctive graffiti street art design, this piece pops with energy and a romantic beauty. It is a large canvas that makes a wonderful statement and has an edgy and elegant composition. This stunning piece comes ready to be displayed with hanging wire on the back and is signed lower right and on verso. Art measures 58 x 40 inches JM Robert's portraits start with a bright a bold background done with spray paint. JM started his career as a graffiti artist, painting his signature portraits on the walls of Paris France, and parts of Europe. Today he is able to bridge Fine Art with Street Art on to his canvases in an elegant dance consuming his audience with color and beauty effortlessly. Once the portrait is hand drawn, his muse becomes alive, seemingly made from an alternate world, one where figures are sculptures made from graffiti art. The brightness from the spray paint is subdued with black ink to create a truly outstanding body of work. His free-hand paintings enchant audiences around the world, captivating the emotions of each and every single portrait perfectly, telling a story from which we can only imagine. Scarcely evoked, the facial features are already vanishing. It seems that the faces were sketched, but did not have time to be completely formed. It is also a trace of an anonymous passage, a presence that is fragile, precarious, and always feminine. There are sad, joyful, sometimes distant looks. But these faces are always in the hope of something, a trace of life in a chaotic setting as in Pompeii or Hiroshima, JM Robert wants to represent the shadow of these figures. He picks up these feminine faces from everyday life, in his opinion, they bear witness of our time. This astonishing piece comes ready to be displayed with hanging wire on the back. The piece is signed lower right and on verso. On his canvases, colors burst into a myriad of fragments that no longer manage to find their meaning to take shape. The use of vivid colors often helps to classify his work in the category of pop art but he crosses the boundaries of style to create pieces that exude a timeless emotion, bridging classical and contemporary, creating a completely unique style of his own. Born and raised in a small country town in the French region of Burgundy, 29 years-old JM Robert started painting at a very young age before getting an Art and decoration degree at the Beaux-Arts School in Paris. Today he strives to create paintings that draw from his experiences from a young age, expanding into impressive and powerful canvases. What is the passage of time? What is left of our presence in a place? What trace do we leave of our passage on earth? These are the questions that artist JM Robert raises in his works. PROVENANCE: Lilac Gallery Collection. The piece is signed lower right and titled by the artist and will be stamped from Lilac Gallery on its verso.

  • "Set Us In Stone I" (abstract, blue, Parisian, graphic, bust on natural canvas)
    By Nicholas Evans

SET US IN STONE I 2022 Paris, France Originally created as part of Nicholas' solo exhibition "This, and Thereafter (Plumes)," December 10, 2022 - January 7, 2023. The theme illustrated the enigmatic uncertainty around what might happen after life. A range of paintings were presented – vibrant and ethereal – touching on different aspects of this notion. Each painting had a different point of view, oftentimes focusing around the inevitability of what is to come, and if and how it influences the present. This particular piece centers around personal legacy, how you will be remembered, and how your life vanishes into an abstraction as time goes by. This notion is visualized with a bust set in stone. The technique Evans used was a mixing of water-based ink with a hint of blue, that he knew would react when overlaid with white acrylic, pulling out a lighter hue of the blue ink. The white silhouette of a portrait set in stone creates a ghostly continuation of the underlaid pattern. Option to create a pair alongside "Set Us In Stone II" (as pictured). Price and size are per painting. Evans Deventer...
