About the Item
A French late 20th Century Abstract Expressionist portrait of Narcissus on canvas by Joel Crance. The painting is signed bottom left and signed, titled and with a dedication to the back of the canvas. The work is presented in a deep moulded white lacquered wood frame.
A lively and colourful portrait in the Abstract Expressionist style, a representation of the classical myth of the image of Narcissus who fell in love with his own reflection. Strong vivid colours make for a powerful composition using a vivid colour palette with highlights of gold foil. Crance has also pierced the canvas using a twine string to create a heart shape framing the face. He has created wonderful texture and movement on the canvas. An arresting yet very decorative painting verging on the abstract.
Abstract expressionism is the term applied to new forms of abstract art developed by American painters such as Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko and Willem de Kooning in the 1940s and 1950s. It is often characterised by gestural brush-strokes or mark-making, and the impression of spontaneity.
In Greek mythology, Narcissus was a hunter from Thespiae in Boeotia who was known for his beauty. According to Tzetzes, he rejected all romantic advances, eventually falling in love with his own reflection in a pool of water, staring at it for the remainder of his life. After he died, in his place sprouted a flower bearing his name.
Narcissus has been a subject for many painters such as Caravaggio, Poussin, Turner, Dalí, Waterhouse, Carpioni, Lagrenée, and Roos.
