This lovely British Edwardian portrait oil painting is attributed to circle of John Singer Sargent. Sargent was born in America then trained in Paris before coming to London. Painted circa 1910, this half length portrait is of a seated lady, wearing a red sleeveless dress with a black jacket off her shoulders. She has a red flower on her lapel and is holding a red feather across her lap. Although her body is more profile she is turning her head to the artist/viewer and smiling slightly, suggesting a warmth in their relationship. Her dark hair is swept off her face. The detail in her facial features is lovely as is the brushwork. This is a superb example of a portrait oil painting from Edwardian era. The painting is signed lower right. Provenance. London estate. Condition. Oil on canvas, 24 inches by 20 inches and in good condition. Frame. Housed in a gilt Watts frame, 31 inches by 27 inches, in good condition. John Singer Sargent (1856-1925) was an American expatriate artist, considered the "leading portrait painter of his generation" for his evocations of Edwardian-era luxury. He created roughly 900 oil paintings and more than 2,000 watercolors, as well as countless sketches and charcoal drawings.
