About the Item
José Bedia
(Havana, Cuba, 1959) Lives and works in Miami, FL
José Bedia is the most solid representative of post-1959 revolution Cuban art. He was part of the now mythical group show Volumen I, which changed the course of the formation of the island and the “Cuban renaissance,” known in Cuba as the 80’s Generation. Galería nina menocal was the first to show the works of the members of this movement outside the island.
From early in his career Bedia has focused on studying the culture and spirituality of ancient and primitive populations from Africa, Cuba, Mexico, and the United States. His main interest surrounds incorporating this vision to that of global contemporary art.
The use of text, through the use of pictograms, found materials in his endeavors, and his distinct drawing style (borrowed from the masculine realistic style of the Dakota tribe) are carried out with great dexterity, a constant in his line of work. Singed, bottom left, “J Bedia 17.”
