About the Item
This lovely British portrait oil painting is by noted artist Lionel Ellis. The painting comes from a collection of works by the artist, previously owned by his wife. Painted circa 1930, the composition is a seated portrait of a girl in a blue dress with black lace mantilla covering her head and one shoulder. A super Picassoesque Blue Period portrait with wonderful colouring in her skin tone and an excellent example of the artist's work.
Provenance. Previous estate of Barbara Shaw, the artist's wife.
James Bourlet labels verso.
Condition. Oil on canvas, 30 inches by 25 inches and in good condition.
Frame. Housed in an fine carved period frame, 37 inches by 33 inches and in good condition.
Lionel Ellis ARCA (1903-1988) was an important twentieth-century painter, illustrator, engraver and teacher who specialised in portraits, as well as equestrian and floral subjects. He studied at the Plymouth school of Art 1918-22 and Royal College of Art 1922-25 and won a travelling scholarship in 1925 travelling to Colarossi's, Paris, Florence and Rome. He taught at Wimbledon School of Art between 1937 and 1968 and lived in Headley, Surrey. His partner was fellow artist Barbara Shaw. His work is held at the V&A Museum, the British Museum and provincial museums. He exhibited 1927-33. New English Art Club 3, Redfern Gallery 45.
