About the Item

"Moorish Soldier Holding a Rifle" Manuel Garcia Hispaleto (Spanish, 1836-1898) Watercolor on paper Signed lower left "MGHispaleto" Original wood frame with gilded stucco 18 3/4 x 12 1/2 (33 1/2 x 26 frame) inches Manuel García Hispaleto, originally Manuel García y Martínez (22 November 1836, Seville -26 December 1898, Madrid) was a Spanish painter known for portraits and costumbrista (genre) scenes. His brother, Rafael García Hispaleto was also a painter. Many sources refer to him as Manuel García y García, but his mother's maiden name appears to have been Martínez.  His father operated a moderately successful import sales business. In 1847, at the age of eleven, he began attending classes at the Real Academia de Bellas Artes. His older brother, Rafael, also studied there and, in 1853, Rafael adopted the pseudonym "Hispaleto," to distinguish himself with others that shared the same name. Hispaleto is a reference to the original Roman name for Seville:"Hispalis." After Rafael's early death, at the age of twenty-two, Manuel adopted the name in remembrance of deceased brother. Manuel moved to Madrid in 1854 to continue his studies at the "Escuela de Santa Catalina", a satellite school of the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando. Beginning in 1860, he became a regular participant in the National Exhibition of Fine Arts and would have showings there until 1895. In 1872, Hispaleto returned to Seville, where he sought inspiration from the costumbrismos (genre painters)of Andalucia. Two years later, he went back to Madrid to take part in an exposition at the Real Fábrica de Platería Martínez (an neo-classical villa which taught silversmithing). There he met Esperanza Romero Cabrera; daughter of María del Rosario Cabrero, the proprietress of the Platería, and her husband, the poet Gregorio Romero Larrañaga. He remained in Madrid and, five years later, they were married at the Basílica pontificia de San Miguel. They had three children, one of whom died in infancy. He was one of the founding members of the Sociedad de Acuarelistas (watercolorists) and attended their annual exhibitions. For many years, he was a professor at the Escuela de Artes y Oficios. He also worked on restoration projects for the Museo del Prado as well as becoming lithographer.    His presence in the National Exhibitions of Fine Arts was constant and the awards he won were frequent and many in number winning awards in 1860, 1862, 1864 and 1867. At the National Exhibition of 1871 he was awarded the Simple Cross of María Victoria and this same year he also obtained the Medal for the Promotion of the Arts. Recontinued to submit works to the National Exhibitions of 1876, 1878 and 1881. In 1871, he was also awarded the Order of Charles III.  Outside the scope of the National Exhibitions, Hispaleto attended others, such as the Seville Exhibition of 1868, organized by the city's Academy of Fine Arts, the Vienna Exhibition of 1882, etc. Hispaleto 's favorite themes were traditional ones, but he also practiced portraiture, within the realistic and academic option of painting of his time. Along with other Madrid artists, he collaborated in the creation of the foundation of the Madrid Watercolor Society in 1871.  His paintings can be found in the El Prado Museum.   *This work of art is enroute from France and should arrive soon.14
