Michael Porten
"No Why (Blue on Red)" - conceptual art, wall sculpture - Lawrence Weiner

2022

About the Item

"No Why" is a part of a series of conceptual work featuring red, blue and yellow primary colors. Michael Porten is an interdisciplinary artist whose works range from paintings, sculpture, letterwork, murals and more. For TURNING POINT, Michael created new paintings from his ongoing series that hinge on the word “NO.” We all have things we like and dislike, or give and receive instructions for rights and wrongs. These paintings look at who we are or want to be by examining things that we do not like or take for granted. Michael sees this approach as a type of reductive societal portraiture. Michael is based in Savannah, Georgia, where he received a BFA in illustration and an MFA in painting from The Savannah College of Art and Design. His inspiration is often drawn from contemporary pop culture and iconography, focusing on “the synchronicity of seemingly disparate content and contexts,” and his points of reference range from Vonnegut to Voltaire. Michael's work is about exhausting the possible. His process consists of taking an idea and exploring its variations and combinations in sketches and on his computer, then pushing it through as many physical, painted, printed or sculpted variations as necessary until it reaches a state of maximum aesthetic density. His work has been exhibited in galleries in the U.S. and abroad, and has been discussed in publications such as New American Paintings, Oxford American Magazine and the Metropolis Magazine online edition.
