Alfred Neville Lewis 1895-1972 was a South African born artist who painted in England and South Africa. This portrait was probably painted in South Africa in the 1950's, it is a young black girl from almost certainly a middle class background, Lewis regularly painted portraits from the working classes and usually from rustic rural communities. This is a painting outside of his usual South African oeuvre.
