About the Item
"Lily" by Roni Taharlev is a captivating 18" x 12" oil on canvas that exudes a soft and introspective atmosphere. In this intimate portrait, muted tones of peach, earthen brown, and subdued whites blend harmoniously, encapsulating the subject in a reflective moment. The gentle brushwork in the background contrasts with the more defined, thoughtful strokes shaping Lily's delicate features and her downcast gaze. This portrayal speaks to the quiet strength and inner life of the subject, inviting viewers into a moment of tender vulnerability. The minimalistic color palette and loose, expressive technique highlight Taharlev's skill in capturing human emotion, rendering "Lily" a deeply personal and evocative work.
With Frame: 26" x 21"

Roni Taharlev: Transcending the Boundaries of Figurative Art Early Life and Background
Roni Taharlev was born on June 16, 1964, in Kibbutz Yagur, Israel. She is the offspring of creative lineage—her father Yoram Taharlev was a renowned Israeli lyricist, and her mother Nurit Zarchi is a distinguished poet and author. This artistic environment would lay the groundwork for her venture into the world of fine art. Academic and Teaching Experience Taharlev serves as a faculty member at the Bezalel Academy of Art, where she teaches painting and drawing. Further extending her influence on the next generation of artists, she was a Visiting Artist at the Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin (Berlin Institute of Advanced Studies) from 2019 to 2020. Artistic Style and Themes Taharlev is predominantly a figurative painter, her work echoing classical European art but invigorated with a modern twist. She confronts complex issues of identity, gender roles, and societal norms. Her art explores objectification, the boundaries of gender binaries, and cultural aspirations toward determinism versus ambivalence and play. Exhibitions and Recognition Her artwork has been showcased in a multitude of solo and group exhibitions. Among her most recent is a solo exhibition at the Tel Aviv Museum of Art in 2023, titled "Not This Light, the Other Light." This retrospective will also include new works and will mark her achievement as the Haim Shiff Prize Winner. Her work has also been part of collections at prestigious institutions like the Israel Museum and the Tel Aviv Museum of Art. She has exhibited internationally, including venues like the Galeries Nationales du Grand Palais in Paris, the National Portrait Gallery in London, and the Brigham Young University Jerusalem Center. Her work has also been featured in a variety of catalogues, solidifying her reputation in the art community. Awards and Accolades Taharlev has garnered significant recognition, winning Israel's highest award for figurative art, the Haim Shiff Prize for Figurative-Realist Art, in 2022. She was also one of the winners of the Rappaport Prize at the Tel Aviv Museum of Art in 2021. Her artistry has also been acknowledged abroad, winning the BP Award at the National Portrait Gallery, London, in 2012, and an Artist Award during her work at the Wissenschaftskolleg in Berlin in 2019-2020. Legacy and Impact With her powerful artworks and extensive career in teaching and exhibitions, Roni Taharlev remains a beacon in the world of contemporary Israeli art. Her work will continue to challenge and engage audiences, shaping conversations about identity, society, and the potential of art itself.

- Fine Old Master Portrait, by Gillis Claeissens, Portrait of a Lady, 1580, BrugesBy Gillis ClaeissensLocated in Greven, DEGillis Claeissens Portrait of a Lady, probably "Anne Joigny-de Pamele" Oil on wood, 35,5 x 28 cm Gillis Claeissens has only recently been rediscovered as an important portrait painter of the 16th century. He received his training in the studio of his father, Pieter I Claeissens. Gillis became a freemaster of the St Luke's Guild in Brussels in 1566 and worked at the court of Alexander Farnese in Brussels between 1589 and 1592. Later he was also court painter to the Archdukes Albert and Isabella. After his return to Bruges, he created portraits of high Bruges society. It was only through the Forgotten Masters exhibition in Bruges in 2018 that the work of Gillis Claeissens was rediscovered. The present painting recently turned up in a private collection and was confirmed as a typical work by Claeissens by Mrs Oosterwijk at the Museum Groeninghe in Bruges. Gillis Claeissens or Egidius Claeissens (Bruges, 1526 – Bruges, 17 December 1605) was a Flemish painter of portraits and altarpieces and a member of a prominent family of artists originating in Bruges. It has only been possible to distinguish Gillis Claeissens' work from that of his father and siblings after scholars discovered a contract with the artist for the painting of a tryptich. It was further discovered in 2015 that he artist can be identified with the Monogrammist G.E.C. These discoveries have allowed to recognise Gillis Claeissens as an important portraitist alongside Pieter Pourbus in 16th century Bruges.
