- A Restful Moment in the HaremBy William Gale (British)Located in New York, NYWilliam Gale British 1823 - 1909 A Restful Moment signed with artist's monogram WG lower left oil on canvas Unframed: 30.6 by 41cm., 12 by 16¼in. Framed: 52 by 62cm., 20½ by 24½in. William Gale was a talented history and genre oil painter, born in London in 1823. He won many accolades as a student at Royal Academy Schools, and travelled to Italy in 1851 and the Middle East in 1862 and 1867. Due to his many influences , Gale's paintings are in an array of styles including sentimental, biblical, mythological subjects, portraits and orientalist pictures. Examples of his work are held by the Tate, Glasgow City Art Galleries and Museums and Art Gallery of New South Wales. William Gale was one of the many artists who, upon finishing his study at the Royal Academy Schools, set out to explore the east: namely North Africa, Algeria, Palestine and Syria. These remote countries at the crossroads of civilizations captivated his imagination, which he explored through his work. Following in the footsteps of the great Orientalists John Frederic Lewis and Jean Leon Gerome, William Gale evokes the Eastern Woman, the bright colors and delicate textures that can be found in the East. Using pure, rich glazes and extraordinary attention to detail, he renders the luxurious, beautifully embroidered headscarf. Eastern women kindled a curiosity in almost every Orientalist artist...Category

- 19th century British portrait of Sir Charles Dickens seated in an interiorBy Daniel MacliseLocated in Woodbury, CTWell painted 19th-century portrait of Sir Charles Dickens. The original painting is in the National Gallery in London and I'm sure this piece would have been painted by a fan of the author who was also a very good artist as this piece is a very good copy of the original painting. There was a great fashion to paint copies of famous paintings during the 19th century and most of the world's most famous paintings have been copied many times. Often the artist who does the copy is very talented but usually anonymous With this piece, it's the only way to own an antique copy...Category

- 19th century French, Surrender of the French at Huningen Fort to the AustriansLocated in Woodbury, CTWonderful French period copy of the famous painting by Jean-Baptiste Édouard Detaille, which the original is now in a museum in Paris. This piece came from a private collection in New Jersey where it had been since it was purchased in France back in the 1950s. The previous owner was an Art dealer in NYC during the 1950s-70s and she kept some of her favorite paintings, this being one of them. The piece was re-framed in the 1990s In 35 years of dealing in paintings, I have never seen another example of this scene, it is very rare.! History of the scene: In the Siege of Hüningen (27 November 1796 – 1 February 1797), the Austrians captured the city from the French. Hüningen is in the present-day Department of Haut-Rhin, France. Its fortress lay approximately 2.5 miles (4.0 km) north of the Swiss city of Basel and .5 miles (0.80 km) north of the spot where the present-day borders of Germany, France, and Switzerland meet. During the time of this siege, the village was part of the Canton of Basel City and the fortress lay in an area contested between the German states and the First French Republic. The siege occurred within the French Revolutionary Wars during which Revolutionary France ranged...Category
