Tslil Tsemet
"KAMA SUTRA", surrealist oil painting, gender, sexuality, vagina dentata, myth

2013

About the Item

"KAMA SUTRA", 2013, is an oil painting on canvas by artist Tslil Tsemet, and measures 57x39". Characteristic of the artist's best work, it's composed as a tableau – a man at center with five women (the same woman?) arrayed around him. His hands, feet and genitals are being bitten by what can only be described as "vagina dentata" – the folk tale and myth (found worldwide) of the toothed vagina. Exotic flowers float throughout, themselves as potent and dangerous as they are beautiful. The small baby in the man's arms completes this radical reproductive/seductive cycle. From Tslil Tsemet – "Through art, I examine the human species via the social and cultural values that we bond ourselves to, and the collective ideals we grasp in order to maintain sanity. My paintings are inspired by the imagery of global cultures, religions, mythologies, and philosophies. I create art that stimulates many parts of the brain at once; that is simultaneously funny, disgusting, attractive, twisted, sad, happy, scary, mysterious, confusing, beautiful, and ugly — just like life." From VICE Magazine – "As a kid growing up in Nahariya, Israel, artist Tslil Tsemet wasn't breast-fed. Curious about how it felt, she and her older sister decided to use drinking straws in order to try to drink milk from a stray cat who just had kittens. It didn't work, but the amusing yet creepy experience remained with the artist and influenced her body of work as an adult. Tsemet's art is at once weird, imaginative, and disturbing—serving as a commentary on the delicate yet crucial balance between innocence and cruelty." Tslil Tsemet has had a number of solo exhibitions in the U.S. and Israel, including Studio 939 and Neutra Museum in Los Angeles, California, the ATA Gallery in San Francisco, California, and the Jaffa Art Salon in Tel-Aviv, Israel. Her work has appeared in group shows, including Think Tank Gallery, Hive Gallery and Gregorio Escalante Gallery, all of Los Angeles, California; and also the Alfred Gallery, Hanina Gallery and Palace Gallery, all of Tel-Aviv, Israel. Tslil Tsemet received her BFA in 2011 at Bezalel Academy of Art and Design, Jerusalem, Israel. She currently lives and works in New York City, USA.
