"Labour & Health", After Thomas Barker of Bath Pastoral Reverse Glass Painting

ca. early 1800s

About the Item

SALE ONE WEEK ONLY This exceptional painting of a smoking peasant carrying a scythe with his daughter or wife in a rustic setting was created by the rare and difficult technique of reverse glass painting. The original painting that this reverse glass painting is reproducing is by Thomas Barker of Bath and was originally painted sometime in the late 18th century as an engraving of this work was made by engraver Thomas Gauguin in 1799 and has a style reminiscent of later period pastoral paintings. Thomas Barker was born in 1769 near Pontypool in Monmouthshire in England. A self-taught artist, he began young in copying Dutch and Flemish masters before becoming an exhibitor at the Royal Academy where his prolific works earned him a large amount of popularity. Thomas Barker of Bath was a popular subject for art reproduction in his lifetime owing to his rustic subject matter and he earned himself a small fortune from these reproductions of his works. In reverse glass paintings the medium utilized is glass. The reverse refers to paint being applied to the reverse side of the glass. Traditionally in painting the base layers are applied first and accents and highlights come after, but in reverse glass painting the order is reversed. As a result of this, reverse glass painting is a very meticulous and difficult process that requires a great deal of proficiency in the craft for the work to come out as magnificently as this painting is.

  • "Joe Louis" Oil on Board with Mixed Media, Iconic Portrait, African American
    By Henry Heading
    Located in Detroit, MI
“Joe Louis” is a breathtakingly beautiful portrait of a man who was the best in his profession yet humble in his demeanor. Louis was an American professional boxer who competed from 1934 to 1951. Nicknamed the Brown Bomber, Louis is widely regarded as one of the greatest and most influential boxers of all time. He reigned as the world heavyweight champion from 1937 until his temporary retirement in 1949. He was victorious in 25 consecutive title defenses, a record for all weight classes. Louis had the longest single reign as champion of any boxer in history. He is widely regarded as the first person of African-American descent to achieve the status of a nationwide hero within the United States, and was also a focal point of anti-Nazi sentiment leading up to and during World War II because of his historic rematch with German Boxer Max Schmeling in 1938. He was instrumental in integrating the game of golf, breaking the sport's color barrier in America by appearing under a sponsor's exemption in a PGA event in 1952. The artist, Henry Heading...

  • "Muse of Mystery", Encaustic, Oil, and Paper on Wood
    Located in Detroit, MI
Celebrating our common colors as well as our diversity is Linden Godlove’s latest series of encaustics, “The Muses.” The paintings are modeled after icons, with a direct gaze that hearkens a response to their spirit, to find company in their character. This particular piece is the "Muse of Mystery" and is part of a set of nine that are sold separately from one another. Encaustic painting is an ancient art form (some early icons are encaustic), where hot wax is mixed with pigment and resin, and painted while liquid. Throughout the process, everything is repeatedly fused with fire and sometimes things melt in an unintended direction. Linden’s process involves repeatedly carving parts out and filling them back in, so the works are splayed out in a loose application of hot liquid, then cut back, then washed over with brushes of hot wax again. It’s a combination of chaos and control. The series draws inspiration from women all over the globe, as originally photographed by Mihaela Noroc for her book The Atlas of Beauty. A portion of the proceeds from these sales will go towards her project. While internationally influenced, the pieces were painted, scraped, and carved at the artist’s hundred year old Detroit...
