1959

About the Item

Mid Century Oil Portrait of a Dancer By Zikvo Zic C.1959 Original oil on canvas Canvas dimensions 31" wide x 39" high The frame measures 35" wide x 43" high The painting is signed in the lower right corner Good vintage condition Zivko Zic (Croatian/American, 1924-2015) was a native of Yugoslavia. Compelled to leave his country during the Communist invasions, Zic settled in Rome where he simultaneously enrolled at the Scuola di Medicina and La Accademia di Belle Arte. After three years of studies, in 1947, Zic moved to Argentina, where he painted prolifically, having his first solo exhibition in Buenos Aires, in 1955. Though based in Chicago since his immigration to the United States in 1961, Zivko Zic traveled extensively throughout America. Like the 19th century Barbizon painters, Zic was concerned with the overall mood of scenes in nature and capturing the poetry in a subject. Drawing technical inspiration from 19th and early 20th century European plein air painting and American plein air painting of the 20th century, Zic painted with wet thick oil paint. Often referred to as lyrical expressions, his paintings are color notes of rapidly changing light and shadow. He often returned to the same location two or three times at the same hour of the day in an effort to capture the color and quality of a moment.

In it the Madonna stands firmly upon a cloud in the heavens, her Child resting on a delicate veil further supported by a cloud, as he gently wraps his arm around his mother’s neck. From above angels prepare to lower flowers and a wreath, while other angels and seraphim surrounding the two joyfully cavort. • A Chinese Company playing Droughts
    Located in Amsterdam, NL
ERWIN BINDEWALD (1897-1950) Two men playing draughts, a girl with the red book standing behind them Signed and dated E. Bindewald d.j., 27 Oil on canvas, 140.5 x 90.5 cm In black and gilt gesso frame. Note: Bindewald was born in Charlottenburg. He moved to Berlin in 1914 where he studied till 1924 at the Berliner Kunst Akademie. Bindewald travelled in Europe, but mainly stayed in Germany and certainly never was in China. This painting was made in Europe, presumably in the China Town of Berlin. Bindewald received several commisions in Germany from factory owners who wanted their factories painted inside, usually with workers, as well as outside. In the present painting the sitter on the right seems to be a man with a Manchurian background, wearing the brown coat reserved for the highest aristocracy in China. In China the black sleeve-ends completely cover the hands, indicating that the high aristocracy does not have to do any manuel labour. This man clearly is not a factory worker but he possibly is the (co)- owner of the factory in the background and as such might need his hands to do at least some writing. The man on the left in the modern Western suit...
