Winnie Sidharta Ambron
Ether

2015

About

“Ether” is a modern interpretation of classical portraiture. In this piece, Ambron uses watercolor and gold to experiment with portraiture, camouflage, and visual unity. There are both delicate and bold accents of gold throughout the piece that draw the eye around the composition and reflects light. Though the piece is unframed, the artist purposefully placed a vibrant blue border around the figure to visually frame it, alluding to conventions of classical portraiture. Ambron beautifully alludes to the past while creating a contemporary and unique portrait that draws the viewer in from afar. The minute details of texture and patterns throughout the piece offer a striking and beautifully captivating take on classical portraiture. As an artist born in East Java, Indonesia, Winnie Sidharta Ambron has had many opportunities to observe the diverse social and political divisions between eastern and western culture. After pursuing a painting degree at The Central Academy in Beijing, Winnie spent several years living in China. In 2010, Winnie was accepted to The Ohio State University, where she received her MFA and later taught in the Painting and Drawing Department. She currently lives and works in New York City, and continues to examine the overlaps and divisions between eastern and western culture with specific interest in notions of beauty, consumption and identity.
