Untitled, 1994 (SFP94-6) is an acrylic painting on canvas, laid on board, from Francis' 'Last Works' collection. The canvas is 12.5 x 16 inches and stamped verso with the Sam Francis estate stamp. Framed in a contemporary white frame. In 1994, nearing the end of his life, Francis produced an intense and profound series of paintings. He would produce with such vivaciousness and vigor that one could easily mistake the paintings for the work of a much younger man; rather than that of an ailing artist. He struggled mightily to paint; having lost the use of his right arm, he worked on small canvases only. Despite his physical challenges, Francis knew his medium like it was an extension of his being; color reflective of his emotions, and the brush used with such deftness of touch as to infer a part of him. In these paintings, the sense of inner cohesion and purpose that had always characterized his art disintegrates at times, and an overwhelming feeling of chaos takes over. The colors are expertly laid down in the technique he perfected, resulting in a deep push-pull effect from one layer to another. Combined with his hand-made pigments and unfailing sense of color, the gorgeous surface of these paintings is a final testament to his unique soul, skill and perspective.
