Sandra Cohen
"where were you?", contemporary, flowers, pink, orange, purple, white, painting

2018

About the Item

Sandra Cohen’s “where were you?” is an 8 x 8 x 1 inch acrylic painting on cradled wood. Flowers outlined in fine graphite seem to weep in front of a vibrant patterned background of pink, orange, purple and white. This contemporary painting is unframed with painted white sides, and the signature on the back. Sandra Cohen’s dreamlike painting and mixed media work explores the paradoxical nature she finds everywhere. Cohen layers a constantly shifting ground of memory with snippets of lyrics, invasive ‘earworms’, and the human tendency to create order from chaos. Music is intimately entwined with memory for Cohen, who has been a performing musician and songwriter. She also has a deep interest in science, especially the concepts of modern physics. Using techniques that vary from wet to dry and tight to loose, and processes that may weave between digital and tactile, the act of creating the work also reflects what she hopes emerges: glimpses of a true/false spectrum wavering into being as lustrous, rhythmic, and often darkly humorous hybrids. Cohen is represented by Fountain Street Gallery in Boston, MA.
