Shelter Serra
Mario (Grin), 2018, Ink and pencil on paper, black and white, by Shelter Serra

2018

About the Item

Mario (Grin) 2018 16”x16.5”x1.25” inches Sumi ink and pencil on Japanese Washi Paper Mario, the main character from the Super Mario Bros. video game is one of the most recognizable images and a true archetype of our contemporary society. This traditional hand-drawn portrait of Mario in ink on paper, renders his likeness akin to a snapshot, or cell, removing him from the digital realm and freezing him in our tangible world of reality. Shelter Serra’s paintings, sculptures, and drawings explore mass consumption and cultural identity. He juxtaposes subject matters that are both common and recognizable: a Campbell's Soup Can, a copper plated baseball hat, and a Hermes Birkin bag cast in resin, as examples. By portraying these sculptures of aesthetic contemplation. “Refining an aesthetic and making beautiful objects, whether that be a dress, bag, or sculpture," says Serra, "is a celebration of pure creativity and personal vision.” Shelter Serra, who is related to minimalist master Richard Serra, has collaborated with the Art Production Fund, Helmut Lang, Converse, and Chanel. Solo exhibitions of his work have been presented at BTW Gallery in Geneva, Anonymous Gallery in Mexico City, Beams B Gallery in Tokyo, and Marlborough Gallery in New York, among other galleries. His work has been included in group exhibitions at institutions such as Philadelphia’s ICA, Maryland Institute of Art in Baltimore, and Urbis Art Centre in Manchester.

  • Golden City - 24k Gold and Mineral, Cityscape, Luxurious, Big Painting, Gemstone
    By Maria Mitsumori
    Located in Tokyo, JP
This large painting is Mitsumori's very first maiden work. An original mineral painting, made with 24k gold, crushed minerals (natural and synthetic), oyster shells and gold-coated mica on Japanese paper mounted on a wood panel. Natural colors include precious and semi-precious stones. Because these substances consist of unique chemical and physical properties, every artwork has unique characteristics and a story to tell, with a sense of connection to the earth. It is highly textured with a matt and rich sand-like appearance. What originally inspired her to paint was the cityscapes of Jaisalmer. Jaisalmer is a city in India known as the “golden city” that gleams in gold-like colors at sunset. The city shimmered like a piece of gold jewelry, reminding her of jewelry that retains its shine even after a thousand years. She felt a strong desire to capture them in paintings and set out to do so. Presents the sceneries seen through her eyes in an art form. In mint condition, Certificate of Authenticity included and calligraphy seal in front, hand-signed at the back. Sold unframed and ready to hang (eye bolt and string mounted at the back). • As One - Gold Leaf and Minerals, Astronomy Painting, Stars, Outer Space, Science
    By Maria Mitsumori
    Located in Tokyo, JP
An original mineral painting, made with 3 layers of 24k gold leaves, natural and synthetic minerals, and sea shells (calcium carbonate) on Japanese washi paper mounted on a wood panel. Natural colors include gemstones or precious and semi-precious stones such as azurite (deep ocean blue). Because these substances consist of unique chemical and physical properties, every artwork has unique characteristics and a story to tell, with a sense of connection to the earth. It is highly textured with a matt and rich sand-like appearance. I wanted to let the materials speak as much as the story. Not necessarily in a loud manner, but to communicate the value of authenticity and how they play together as one big piece of jewelry. Beneath all the complex minerals, there are 3 layers of 24k gold leaves covering the entire 80 cm surface. When light passes through various dimensions, hints of gold reveal its presence and brighten the surrounding dark colors in an incredibly mesmeric way. Just like the stars in the sky, you may not see them at times but when they do, they surely brighten up the sky. In mint condition, Certificate of Authenticity included and calligraphy seal in front, hand-signed at the back. Sold unframed and Ready to hang (eye bolt and string mounted at the back).
