Ben Fenske
"Spring, Wildflowers" Neo Impressionist still life of red poppies in Tuscany

2023

About the Item

An oil painting of Tuscan wildflowers (red poppies, chamomile, and daisies), by Contemporary American Impressionist Ben Fenske. Painting dimensions: 35.5 x 29.5 inches Framed Dimensions: 41 x 35 inches Inspired by the French Impressionists, Ben Fenske’s timeless, vividly colored paintings are saturated with the light of the Tuscan countryside. Fenske’s landscapes, interiors, portraits, and still lifes are characterized by bold, expressive brushwork and exemplary use of color and tone. Though focusing on everyday subjects, works such as Red Shirt (2016) and Evening Breeze (2017) are charged with emotion, hinting at a narrative that remains obscure. Fenske prefers to paint landscapes—such as View of Bonazza (2018)— en plein air, avoiding the studio walls that he views as sterile and constricting. Similarly, still lifes are painted in situ, imbuing them with vibrancy and immediacy. In 2012, the American Artist Magazine included Fenske in their list of the Best 25 Living Artists, and in 2016 he exhibited at the annual BP Portrait Award Exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery in London. Artist Bio Ben Fenske (b. 1978) although a native of Minnesota, and has been working and living in Sag Harbor, New York and Florence, Italy for the last 15 years. An oil painter in the spirit of the 19th and 20th century impressionists, he often chooses informal and contemporary scenes with an implied narrative. His work, which features brash and suggestive brushstrokes, delights in light and color. Fenske has been the subject of countless national articles, most notably the American Artist Magazine which included him as one of the Best 25 Living Artists in 2012.
