About the Item
A oil on paper painting by contemporary artist Constance Mallinson. "Severed Limbs" depicts a tangle of tree branches, bark and wood intertwined.
Hybrid Object expands on my previous “painted collage” still lifes depicting figures and scenes created from decaying natural materials with the incorporation of fragments of manufactured items to now suggest machine-like assemblages. If the Archimboldo inspired humanoid figures allowed that humans are part of the natural cycles of decay, these post-apocalyptic, Road Warrior-esque confabulations prompt scrutiny of the course set by a consumer globalised culture and its impact on the natural world. Although the imagery results from street detritus collected on daily walks through suburban Los Angeles, the work casts a foreboding glance to the future when, due to our inability to change our habits we may be confronted with catastrophic scenarios. Does nature overwhelm us or do we overwhelm nature? With humor and a sense of whimsy, however, Hybrid Object feels like a reconstruction of a barely remembered vehicle from a ruined civilization. Almost fetishizing the beautiful pieces of plastic and metal along with the natural, the object hints at a longing for a resolution of the tensions between nature and culture.

- Castilleja cruenta standlBy Penelope GottliebLocated in Palm Desert, CAA painting by Penelope Gottlieb. "Castilleja cruenta standl" is a contemporary painting, ink, acrylic and oil on canvas panel in a variety of bright, bold colors by American artist Penelope Gottlieb. After receiving her BFA from the Art Center College for Design in Pasadena, Penelope Gottlieb went on to earn her MFA from the University of California in Santa Barbara where she currently lives and works. Gottlieb’s artistic repertoire is thoroughly modern and includes innovative paintings as well as compelling media design, for which she received an Emmy in the field of motion picture title design in 1993. Gottlieb’s more recent works showcase a unique synthesis of her modern graphic design background and the vintage botanical renderings of natural scientists. However, her paintings are also unique in their perspective on the traditional floral still life. Stylized flora and fauna are depicted as emanating from a comic book explosion, illustrating what the artist refers to as “the dire state of the planet” as faced with species extinction and the resulting biological and ecological ramifications. These violent representations of the artistically typified placid natural world are intended as “visual eulogies for lost plant life.” The particular specimens that Gottlieb depicts are in fact extinct and she is able to recreate them only from historical drawings and botanist’s descriptions. Although avant-garde and aesthetically unique, Gottlieb’s paintings delineate clear influences from the renowned artists of Pop and Expressionist art. The composition of many of her paintings is reminiscent of Kandinsky’s canvas-filling outpours while her bold color palette and black outlines recall Lichtenstein’s comic book panels. Her work is also closely related to a more contemporary group of artists, including Alexis Rockman...Category

- “Still Life with Apples”Located in Southampton, NYHere for your consideration is a very well executed still life with apples by the American artist, Richard C. Pionk. Signed lower right “Pionk”. Oil paint on card stock. Condition is excellent. Circa 1980. The artwork is housed in a gold leaf gallery frame from the period which is in fine condition. Overall framed measurements are 10.75 by 12.75 inches. Provenance: A Ellenton, Florida estate. Richard Cletus Pionk (April 26, 1936 – June 5, 2007), beloved instructor of painting at the Art Students League of New York and president of the Salmagundi Club, died June 5, 2007, but his work stands as a masterclass in still life painting, primarily in oils and pastels. Born April 26, 1936 in Moose Lake, Minnesota Pionk moved to New York City where he made a life revolving around painting and teaching. Best known for his still lifes, portraits, and interior scenes in oils and pastels, Pionk learned much about classical still life painting by spending hours in his beloved museums, including the Brooklyn Museum and other New York museums, as well as the École du Louvre in Paris. Pionk studied the works of many artists, in particular Jean-Baptiste-Siméon Chardin, Antoine Vollon, and Henri Fantin-Latour. He also studied with Daniel Green and Sidney E. Dickinson at the Art Students League of New York. He later taught there, and at the Pastel Society of America School and the National Arts Club in New York. He was also the longest running president of the Salmagundi Club. During his accomplished art career, Pionk earned more than 100 awards from the Pastel Society of America, Audubon Artists, National Arts Club, and numerous other professional associations. In 1984, he was named Master Pastelist by the Pastel Society of America, and in 1997 was inducted into the Pastel Hall of Fame.
