A Master of light and still life as well as a famous art historian. David S captures the brilliant red of the fruit against its stark white background. The dark shadows and bright green stem complete the composition. His brush work and color the moment creates a plain air feel to the work bringing its subject to life. David Summers is a world-renowned art historian with 6 books and countless articles to his name. His most influential book, Real Spaces, has changed the way art history is read into a much more inclusive model. Not just an intellectual, he is a brilliant painter as well. He has a particular passion for light and it's reflections. Summer's stylistic inspirations include Manet and Cezanne, while he pulls from extensive knowledge of world religions and mythologies. The title of this piece, The Lesser Net of Indra (Cadmium), bows to a metaphor from the Huayan school of Chinese Buddhism. The Avatamsaka Sutra describes the image of "Indra's net" as a multi-faceted, infinite net with a jewel at each intersection that reflects every other jewel in the net's universe. It is a metaphor used to describe the interconnectedness of the universe in which we live. David Summers taught at Bryn Mawr College and the University of Pittsburgh before accepting an appointment to the Center for Advanced Studies at the University of Virginia in 1981. In 1984 he was appointed William R. Kenan, Jr. Professor of the History of Art. He is the author of Michelangelo and the Language of Art (1981), The Judgment of Sense: Renaissance Naturalism and the Rise of Aesthetics (1987); Real Spaces. World Art History and the Rise of Western Modernism (2003); and Vision, Reflection and Imagination in Western Painting in addition to countless reviews and articles, including the Manifesto for the Louvre Abu Dhabi. He was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1996, and paints whenever he can.
