About

Signed and dated upper right verso. This large-scale grisaille depicts a keystone from Somerset House in London. A unique part of the London cultural scene, Somerset House is a historic Neoclassical building and a key cultural destination in the heart of London. Overlooking the River Thames, this architectural keystone features a bearded river god with coral and seashells in his long hair. Ed Rice meticulously executes and produces realist paintings of buildings great and small. Continuing his study of architectural details as subject matter, Rice uses the grisaille technique of working in a grey monotone to successfully imitate sculpture. Rice's paintings are bathed in glorious light, under cloudless skies, away from the hectic pace of modern life. Born in 1953, Edward Rice's work is in the permanent collections of the Gibbes Museum of Art, Charleston, South Carolina; the Columbia Museum of Art, South Carolina; the South Carolina State Museum, Columbia; the Greenville County Museum of Art, South Carolina; the Georgia Museum of Art, Athens, Georgia; the Morris Museum of Art, Augusta, Georgia; and the Ogden Museum of Southern Art, New Orleans, Louisiana.
