About the Item
George Harvey was born in 1800 in Tottenham, England but moved to the United states at 20 years old and spent several years in the west before he established himself in New York City. In 1828 he was elected an Associate of the National Academy of Design. The following year he moved to Boston where he painted miniature portraits, and developed a unique type of brush work. He then returned to England to study. It was at Hastings, the house he built for himself in America that Harvey planned his notable series of atmospheric views of American scenery in watercolor. In Harvey’s career after 1850, he returned to England, but was known to have made extended painting trips in America. This painting comes without frame but is in excellent condition and is signed lower left.
