Circa 1955

About the Item

Signed lower right, 'H. Winslow' for Helen Winslow (American, 1916-2008) and painted circa 1955. Framed dimensions: 40.5 H x 26.5 W x 2 D Inches. A large and vibrant still-life showing cream and plum colored anemones informally arranged in a creamware jug, set on a table draped with a blue-and-white striped and tasseled cloth. Anemone is a genus of flowering plants in the buttercup family Ranunculaceae. Plants of the genus are commonly called windflowers. Born in North Carolina, Helen Winslow first studied under Robert Brackman at the Art Students League in New York City. After moving to Los Angeles in 1951, she furthered her studies at the Otis Art Institute and later worked and studied with numerous California modernists including Roger Kuntz, Robert Frame, and Sueo Serisawa. During her long and prolific career, Winslow explored many styles although her most consistent inspiration came from her study of the French Impressionists and Post-Impressionists. She was a lifetime member of the Art Students League in New York and also held memberships in the Society of Western Artists (San Francisco), the Royal Society of Arts (Great Britain), and the Los Angeles Art Association. She was the subject of many one-woman shows in notable galleries throughout the West, and her work appeared in juried exhibitions including the Salon des Nations in Paris (1983), the Society of Western Artists Annual (De Young Museum, San Francisco), and the Frye Art Museum in Seattle, among others. Helen Winslow is listed in all relevant art biographical dictionaries and her work is cited in the 1980 edition of World Who's Who of Women, Who's Who of American Women (1983), and the Foremost Women of the Twentieth Century (1984). Winslow's work is also catalogued in the archives of the National Museum of Women in the Arts, Washington, D.C. We are pleased to offer a substantial still-life by this leading American Modernist.
